Scored a Hi-LIft, now...

Hi all,

Well I scored myself a 48" Hi-Lift yesterday for $35. It is brand new except for the dust that it was covered in. The guy I bought it from had never used it to jack anything. Anyhow, I had it out by my jeep today thinking about install points (I'll probably go the muffler clamp-roll bar way) and now have a silly question. Where are good jack points for it? That is if I need to change a tire, should I be jacking from the front and rear since it seems like jacking from the side is not possible. Maybe I'm missing the boat on something, I am pretty tired. Thanks for the tips.

Bumpers are the best! The biggest danger of a High Lift Jack is it slipping and causeing major pain and injury. When I built my last bumper I added these little channel pieces to allow for a slip resistant point or points rather to help in this area. I was going to do the same on the sides when I added sliders but never got that far. Here is a pic of what I mean. tug

Hope that makes some sence.

Yep. Bumpers are the only choice unless you have rocker panels or rocker skids. Most are beefy enough to handle 50% of the weight of the vehicle.

1/4" steel at the rockers will allow you to use them as a good jacking point. Really helps when you're hung up and need to drive off the jack.

yea heres a horror story for you about hi-lifts and how dangerous they are. we were out at the va 4wd assoc. annual trail run and my buddy avery has a zj on 32inch bajas, the big wide suckers. well he changes em out for 32x11.50 bfg at's on trail rides so he can get them inside his fender wells when he flexes. we had it jacked up by the back bumper, which is beef on his zj, had a jack under the axle and had it chocked off so it wouldnt roll. he reaches into the wheel well to grab the tire and pull it off and out of no where the jack slips out from under the bumper and the wheel well comes down on his wrist pinning it between the tire and the body. not good. we immediatley grabbed the zj and lifted it up enough to get it off and thank god he didnt break it but that just goes to show how dangerous they can be. my friend chad was under the zj at the time and i thot the zj had fallen on him. he was jacking up the axle with the bottle jack.

There are a couple practices in that story that begged for injury. Both of your friends were very fortunate.

Oh yeah, I have seen a couple of chins get busted real good...
