Save yourself $500, don't do this.

So I cut a corner on my 4" short arm skyjacker and opted for the T case lowering kit instead of the longer rear CV drive shaft. Saved me $300, right? Wrong. The shifter handel on my Rubicon bumped the console in 6th and reverse. So....I disconnected the shifter handle where it bolts on top of the 6spd transmission, and fired up my torch. I saw some rubber starting to burn as I headed up the lowest part of the handle but I figured it was probably an O ring I could replace for $.05. As the rubber melted, I thought man, that's a lot of melting rubber for a small O ring. It turns out that whole proximal end of the shifter handle contains a big rubber bushing that is now shot. I have to shift my new Rubicon with a damn vice grip which bumps in 4th, 6th, and reverse, AND, it popped off while I was in traffic today and I almost died in a crash because of it. To top it all off, there are no junkyards withing 500 miles with the part and the dealership said it costs, get this, $530 for a new one! Please, somebody give me some sympathy because when I called my dad to lament, he told me that it serves me right for ruining a perfectly good jeep by lifting it. Any one got an extra shifter laying around? I'll pay cash:)

Wow, that stinks!

Have you tried ebay? I don't know what transmission you have, but there are some shifters up there:

Also, you may want to fill some info about your Jeep here.

Here's the transmission and the shifter piece which is black. That little aneurysmal thing at the bottom is filled with rubber. How can this be 500 bucks?

Here's what info i got on my end. I looked up that shifter under a 2006 rubicon. The Dealer price i got is $55.90.. so even if the Dealer adds their mark up price on it, it shouldn't cost more than a $100.00.. Who Gave you that $500.00 price tag?, They're full of crap...

SteelHeadz, where did you go to look that up? I found the entire transmission on Quadratec for 2k. It doesn't seem right, the price I was quoted, I mean, It's just a stupid piece of rod with a special bushing on one end! I wonder if the guy knew what he was talking about. I've looked all over the internet at OEM sites and can't find a place to order the part. I've even tried to find an exploded drawing so I can find a part number. I was dissapointed to find out that the same dang transmission comes in a Chrysler CrossFire, that was like a kick in the nads. Know of a site where it's available?

go to car-part.com it is a site that links up junk yards all over the country and they will ship the parts to you and they all compete on prices. Or you can look for an aftermarket short throw shifter it would be less than $500 and it will solve your clearance problems.

Total over-reaction. I brought the shifter lever into the jeep dealer and have ordered a new one for $53. The myopic old timer I spoke to on the phone read the decimel in the wrong place. The vice grip does look really redneck though, I'll be quasi sad to see it go:)
