With my recent discussion with Scuba about tire carriers I went out to look at mine, an carefull inspection showed a weld was failing. I could have tig welded it to fix it but I am tired of the compression style way that my tire carrier employs to hold the spare, plus I wanted to move my license plate to the center of the tire.
So off to metal mart I went...a 2x2x.0875x 14inches piece of square stock and a 6 inch by .250 slug. A little time on the mill to drill, bore and chamfer three holes.
A quick couple of cuts on the saw
A bit of time with a welder
And the finish product
I bought an ORO license plate relocation bracket and LED light kit for 100$ total cost 118$ for the bracket, metal, and 3 1/2-20 studs, and three spline type acron nuts. Total time 2 days working off and on in 110 degree heat. Conclusion, totally worth it to loose the license plate frame off the tail end.
