I need to replace the ignition switch in my '79 CJ5. However it is not the original and I have no idea what year the column is... Attached are photos.. any help on which switch i need to order to work with this type column?
Same column I have on my 81 CJ7. They are the old GM steering columns. The columns changed when YJ's came out but mostly on the multifunction switch. Some of the bearings are still the same until later on before the TJ body.
Based on the your photos, thats an early 70's Saginaw (GM) steering column w/tilt wheel. The other guys are right about the parts being the same as a OEM CJ column but you'll want the one that is for tilt-wheel columns. A quick search on Ebay will give you all kinds of opinions or a trip to your local parts store.
Are you replacing the key "switch"(tumbler assbly) or the actual ignition switch?? The switch is near the bottom of the column & can be removed fairly easily & then taken to the parts store to verify the one you're buying is correct. Just a thought....
