Rebuilding an AX5

Looking for a manual on how to rebuild an AX5. Never rebuilt a transmission so any info that would put me in the right direction would be great.

The AX5 is expensive to buy parts for and it is a pretty weak transmission. Unless you have a completely stock Jeep I would seriously consider heeding Corrupt's advice. If your Jeep is all stock, and you intend to leave it that way and you do decide to stay with the AX5, do not use GL5 fluid in it, use a synthetic like Redline MT90, Royal Purple, Pennzoil Synchromesh, etc..

The AX5 isn't that bad a transmission IMO, it's very similar to the AX15 but lighter. IMO it's properly suited to the 2.5L and a good option if properly maintained.

Check out a FSM (Factory Service Manual) for your year/model Jeep, it'll contain rebuild info on the AX5. There are also online FSM's out there where you could get the info, but it's scarce as DC cracks down on those hosting it.

I'm rebuilding a spare for someone else. If i were going to upgrade, I would defineatly go with the AX-15. However, the AX-5 in my jeep has help up pretty good over time. I've been running Amsoil in it since I got the vehicle and haven't had any problems with the syncros gettting eaten up. Thanks bounty, I'll keep an eye out for a FSM.

I had to rebuild the AX5 transmission in my '92 Wrangler this past spring. It was my first rebuild ever. It was grinding bad going into 3rd gear and sometimes 2nd gear. I tried the syncomesh fluid route and it didnt help. Next was to replace the synchros. If you need to go that route, I tried to document some information on the website below. It has some videos and AX5 teardown manuals that helped me do the whole thing myself. The procedure for the AX5 and AX15 are almost identical so you can still use the information if you have an AX15.
