Radio on the fritz?

Hello again! One more snag in the line... This morning as I was shutting off my Jeep the radio was still on. Normally it shuts off as soon as I turn the Jeep off so I'm not sure what the deal is. Any suggestions? All the wiring looks good and well-connected. I'm at a loss of ideas.....

there should be two wires for power.

one is always on-for the memory
the other is switched with the ignition- for operating power.

you probably just got these two mixed up. swap them around and you should be fine.

did you run any extra wires for this? or did you just use a harness adapter?

I ran a harness adaptor. See, the radio's been installed for over a year now. That's what I can't understand. Yeah, I already checked those wires. This all just started happening this morning. Let me check one more time to make sure the wires are connected tightly...

Ok, here's the update... it's still doing it. I checked the wires and they all seem fine. What happens is that after I turn the key off it will continue to run for about 20-30 sec. then will shut off. The only way to interupt it is to turn on my CB radio. after I turn that one I would guess the extra charge from wherever gets drained and both things shut off. I have no idea....

i was thinking you just installed it. should have read a bit better.

that's pretty odd.

install anything recently. the only thing i can think of right now is something has a capacitive charge, but that really doesn't make any sense in your jeep.

good luck figureing it out.

Hi,

Some Ideas:

> The radio is bad or malfunctioning and it's power-down function is messed up.
> You have a short between the radio's hot-at-all-times wire and switched Ign. wire
> The radio is receiving power through a relay which is "sticking" on
> You have a capacitor installed somewhere in the Jeep that is backfeeding power into the radio/ ACC circuit (not good!)

The clue about the CB points to the last idea above. If this is what's happening then it is not a good thing. Think if you have any devices besides the radio that might have capacitors that aren't discharging properly. Note that this very well could be an internal radio problem.

Next time it does it, with out the key in the ignition, jiggle the ignition back and forth. if it goes off then, then you ignition key cylinder has a little wear in it, not a big deal. just mean the key is being removed prior to the ignition being completely turned off. My old 94 did this often. If it doesn't switch it off, it is the radio!

As for the radio and relay, there are no relays for the radio in a jeep. accually, the radio runs off of the accessory curcut and not off the ignition (I know just a technecality, so is my spelling), thats why when you turn the key back only some things go on.

how do you have everything wired up?
amp, cb, radio(you said radio was off of a harness so i'm assuming that is still stock configuration.)

ok... I figured out what the issue is. I had my power inverter plugged into my cig. lighter. After I noticed this I pulled the plug on it and it stopped the radio. I'm assuming that it was back feeding into the cig lighter? No clue. Anywho, that's over. Thanks for the input guy! Really appreciate it!

Hi,

Glad you figured it out.
It sounds like the power inverter's capacitors were simply backfeeding into the 12 volt power system. It's intereting to me that they were able to power the radio for any length of time, though.

Haha, yeah. I didn't think it was that powerful...it's only a 375 watt'er. Anywho, at least that's over with. Thanks for the info everyone!
