Ok, I'm sorry, I've got another one. . .

Alright, got all of the harness hooked up as right as I can tell, and everything works fine. HOORAY! But  ,now the Jeep won't shut down. I had to put it in gear and pop the clutch to get it to quit. Anybody have any ideas? I double-checked the wiring and didn't find anything, I'll triple-check it probably tomorrow but if anybody has a a good idea of where I might start, please tell me. I'm stumped. Any help at all would greatly appreciated, thanks!

In the column, there is a gear at the end of the key cylinder, on my CJ that gear was sort of stripped so it would run/start, but when the key turned back, it would not cut power to the ignition.

RE: Ok, I

I have an aftermarket ignition switch mounted on my dash. It has a post for ignition, starter, battery, and accesory. To see where all of these hooked up, I asked to look at a stock ignition switch from O'Reily's and marked which posts were which. As far as I know, everything in the switch is hooked up correctly. I'll double check. Is there anywhere ales I might check?

What I meant was to make sure that your ignition is not always on. As in under the hood, at the coil. If you have the ignition always on, it will start and run right, but it won't turn off. It sounds to me thats what might be happening since you have to kill it to make it stop.

You have what is called an 'open' in your wiring hookup to the starter solenenoid.

CURE: Go to any parts house and ask for a copy of the starter-solenoid-ground set up instructions sheet for you Jeep, year, and starter set up. Re-wire correctly.

Ok, I checked over everything again and this is what I came up with. . . nothing. I did find however, that when I unhook the wire marked in blue, the Jeep will shut down during it's run-on. Is it alright to run without this wire? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

RE: Tie rod / ball joint queston...

What blue wire? The only one I remember is the starter solenoid one, and that should only be working when you turn the key to crank it.

Oh, I'm sorry, meant to post this diagram with it:

Since I posted this, I've found that if I unhook either of the wires going to the regulator, it stops. This is probably just common sense, but I don't know what to think anymore. I'm completely stumped. I've checked over everything and I can't find anything wrong.

Do you think my ingition module could be fried, or would that cause no spark at all? Sorry if I'm being a bother guys, but I need some help. Thanks again.

I don't have access to a 1980 FSM, but the 79 is just like yours in this regard. In the 79 FSM, the only two reasons it lists for the engine to remain running with key in the off position is: 1. Defective ignition switch 2. Defective starter solenoid. :?

That's assuming that it's all wired correctly.

RE: Someone might be heading out east....

Ok, y'all probably don't wanna hear about this anymore, but I found the problem! Apparently, there is a wire that the stock ignition switch labeled I (for ignition) that is hot. Since it was labeled I, I put it on the ignition post of my little ignition switch. That's why it kept on running. I moved this little hot wire over to a accesory post and everything works fine now. Thanks for all of y'all's help!

See, even if NOBODY had answered a single post on this thread, I still like it when people come back and tell us what the problem was and how they fixed it. Too often I start a new thread because when I do a search on "how do I do X?" I find 100 threads with "how do I do X" and not a single one of them tells if they ever fixed the problem and if so how they fixed it. Glad you got it fixed and thanks for posting what the problem was.....

So you had power to the ignition system in other than the run position!
