My 87 Cherokee only has 250,000 miles on it with no internal work done on the engine. Although the oil light has never flickered, I am getting nervous about my oil pressure so I installed a mechanical oil pressure gauge. When cold it holds decent pressure at idle. 35 to 40 lbs. Road speed it holds 30 to 40 lbs at all times even when hot EXCEPT....I live in the mountains and after pulling 3000 ft in elevation and is really hot it drops to 25 to 30 lbs. The problem is hot idle the engine is only holding 7 to 10 lbs pressure. This is not really enough. Do you think the problem is only a worn out pump and maybe a dirty strainer and pickup? I hate to crack a bearing cap lose if the bearings will still run ok, cause that just opens up for more trouble in your not really careful doing it. If the bearings were bad I would think I would have more pressure issues at speed. Anyone else have any thoughts?
