Figured out the reason to all my problems with my jeep and all the money I spent trying to fix the issue. Dropped my tank to put the fuel pump in there and found a 20 gallon tank with a 15 gallon sending unit. :x:x:x Holy hell!!!!

That's a good one for the "things I found in the old Jeep" book. At least it's a simple fix now that you found it.

I've never looked at a CJ fuel sending unit. Does this mean that the sender didn't reach all the way to the bottom of the tank - running out of gas when you still had 1/4 tank?

Yep, that is exactly what would happen. I never ran it out of gas cause I like to keep half a tank in, but it would get down to the point where the pump was not picking up except when it sloshed around in the tank and was burning pumps up. Burned up 4 pumps cause of it. Sure there was a lot of other things wrong that was fixed looking for the problem but holy hell, who does such stupid asinine stuff? On top of that there was no sock attached.
