My york is dead...

The other day my york siezed up...the funny thing about it is the fact that I was demonstrating it for some friends of mine. Well it was pumping along fine at 2K rpms when clang! Pow! SCREEEEEEECH!!!. I stopped the engine and disengauged the clutch and was like, "well thats the end".

Today I got around to actually pulling it off and taking it apart to see just what had happened. After taking it off the engine and taking the bracket off my fears were realized. There was a half doller sized hole on the side of the case near the bottom.

Once I removed the bottom of the case to view the crankshaft I found that the #1 piston had siezed and the connecting rod not only broke...it exploded. The largest chunk was no bigger than a marble. It ended up being in about 17 countable pieces and many many pieces smaller than a BB. The connecting rod bolts were also sitting in there by themselves.

I still don't know why the york blew...it had plenty of oil in it. Oh well maybe it was just its time. I can take some pics if anyone is interested in seeing the carnage. I'll be hitting the junkyards on Monday to see if I can find a replacement.

Yeah I hope so too...the yard that I got it from had thrown almost all of them away because no one wanted them anymore. That was like the last one of 3 and the only one that was any good. Hopefully some of the other yards will have some.[addsig]

A York Compressor is an old HVAC air compessor that you can modify to fit into your Jeep to make air. Once in, all you need is an air tank, and PRESTO...you have on board air. What it means is that on the trail, RayOvac has the ability to use air tools (ie impact wrench, etc, and can imflate tires and such). It is a very useful tool if your on the trail alot.

Im in the process of collecting all the parts I need right now to instal a york system in my Jeep. I know that onboardair.com has almost all of the products needed, but I was wondering if anyone knew of any other sites that sold products like the mounting bracket.

I just want to do some comparison shopping to get the best prices.

I made my own bracket from some steel plate and welded 2 pieces together to form a backwards L.

Cost: About $5

I know you can buy the brackets from some websites but the bracket kits are like $100 and mine is just as good.[addsig]

if you have access to a welder... there is never a need to buy any bracket... or half of anything your jeep needs for that matter[addsig]

It most likely died from overheating if it siezed up...A/C compressors are suction cooled...that means the cool refrigerant vapor that returns from the evaporator keeps the cylinders and pistons cooled....When you pump air, there is not enough cooling...As the air is compressed, the heat is concentrated so to speak...this is called the heat of compression...if the oil temp in the cylinders goes over 275 degrees, it flashes off leaving the cylinders dry...

A sure sign of overheating are carbon deposits on the valves and head...York compressors are remarkably tough to work at all under the conditions seen.

I use a modified York compressor in a refrigerant recovery/distillation reclaimer I designed and built. The major problem I encountered was to keep the compressor cool enough. [addsig]
