RE: moving to NC

Thank you for the help on my last post, here we go again. I think I have determined that my angles are all right (between the pinion and transfer case shafts). I marked everything as I was told to, and removed the driveshaft from the Jeep. Prior to removal I confirmed that the endcaps were able to move on both the pinion yolk and the transfer case yolk (one side on each one). Both yolks are bolt and strap style. Do you think I should just replace the yolks and forget about it, or can I get away with just replacing the straps (a couple of them are pretty worn)? Will take up the play, or will the new u-joints just do the same thing? Also one of the yolks at the end of the drive shaft is doing the same thing. Do I need to replace the drive shaft too? I found a couple of internet sites www.vintagejeepparts.com and discountjeepparts.com that have the drivelines but there is a major difference in price. Where do you recommend looking for parts, if that is the recommendation? Another question, the difference between torquing the pinion nut on semi-floating axles with tapered shaft vs. semi-floating axles with flanged shaft is considerably different. How do I know what I have? My Jeep is a 1981 CJ5. Thank you in advance for all of your help.

You can look at the yokes and tell whether they are damaged or not. The straps probably just loosened up from either stretching or the fastener backing out. If the yokes aren't visibly damaged, just get some new straps and Ujoints and you should be fine. The upgrade to U-bolt style yokes is a good one if you do in fact need to replace them.

Just go to any of the big parts stores and tell them what you need.

Junk, Thank you for the quick response. That is kind of what I was thinking, but was told that there should be no movement at all. On the driveshaft yolk (c clips holding the end caps) the end cap is able to spin too, is that a problem or will new u-joints remedy that?

The old yolks do not look bad to me, they seem smooth (no pits), but there is just a lot of crap built up on them. I was thinking a little clean up, new straps, and let her buck... Any other advice is welcomed.

Thank you again,

The endcaps shouldn't be that loose in the Dshaft, but I'd get some new ones and check the fit before I worried about it.

They are not really sloppy in the DS, just able to spin. Do you think I will be able to tell right away when I put new U-joints in?
