made me a driveshaft today

i started the SOA 2 weeks ago.. and it has since been raining nonstop... i'm doing it in my back yard so i have to work with the weather/sun... i did the SYE so far, and that's about it... i've been driving to and from work (2 blocks away) in wrong wheel drive...

i bought a driveshaft 2 days ago... fixed yoke on the ends.. slip joint in the middle... same size joints as our stockers... would have been a lot easier to find, but i needed the slipjoint... i got it for 10 bucks at some scumbag junkyard... i took it to the hardware store to get it cut... i was gonna cut around the welds and redo that.. but i figured that precision was A)too much work and B)not necessary for a temporary deal... i had the hardware store cut it on their bandsaw so i got some good clean 90 degree cuts at the exact spots i wanted them.. had to cut out 10"...

so.. how to make sure it is put together right so it keeps its balance from the already installed weights? well.. i look inside it and find the weld seam from when the pipe was made... and i mark that on the outside for them to be mated up to weld... then i found a piece of exhaust pipe that fit perfectly inside there snug... i cut the exhaust pipe to fit the length of the shaft.. leaving about 1/8" between the two halfs for weld to fill, i stuck it all together... i was goign to run a continuous bead all the way around it.. but figured not to for warping purposes... i decided to weld in spots to keep the heat down... this pic shows it almost completed... one half welded around...

if the pic doesn't work.. i'll move it to another server

i tried welding on low heat, continuously at first.. you can see that in the upper part of the pic... i went back over that and spotted it over...

50 mph... no vibrations

Hail Snitty, master of the boneyard! how much do you have in this SOA now, about $30? Oh that's right the SYE probably cost a few duckets. Even so, You are probably going to set some sort of budget record for doing a SOA and all related mods!

I wish I was half as resourceful as some of you guys!!

thats awesome, my soa isnt going to be quite so cheap cuz i dont trust myself that much with my driveshafts, thats a good thing to have around as a trail spare or something tho... get one from tom woods and dont ever worry about buying another!

haha.. the grease smelled mighty nice burning... it kept catching on fire.. and i couldn't see it throught the mask... kept getting burnt on my hands... blow it out.. comes back... blow it out.. comes back...

still... no vibrations or anything... goin nice...

haha.. master of the boneyard... i teach Boneyard Digging 101 back at Snitty University

nope... it was balanced when i bought it... i left that weight on there and lined the two pieces up exactly at the seam mark... kept balance pretty well... my welds didn't really affect the balance... here is a pic of it installed... its working great... i love it... first shaft i've ever put together

Here is a pic of the shaft installed...

Here is a pic of the SYE... and you can see how the 91 cherokee transmission has the Tcase clocked wrong... so i had to cut out the skidplate to allow it to sit down inside...

And just for shots and goggles, because i was taking pics... here is a shot of my gauge faces I made last year... my friend broke off my oil pressure needle.. so that is the one i scanned... i have a gas gauge face i have to get on there... and since my gas gauge doesn't go below 1/4, i just made 1/4 the empty mark...

there you have it... temporary driveshaft for the slim pocket

Thats awesome man, now you just need to paint the shaft neon orange or green. And put lots of stickers on it!

no.. that's too much horsepower for my needs

also... if anyone with a 4.0 plans on doing the SYE before they get a lift.... i'll be getting rid of this shaft when the SOA is done... so let me know, $10 will make it yours

Great temporary driveshaft, excellent work. Beware of prolonged use at highway speeds.

this shaft will be too short for a 2.5... by about 2 inches

if you had of made a rear driveshaft out of a cheerokee front DS you could of had the CV....and no need to buy another expensive driveshaft from AA or else where.....i used a stick weilder to weild my cheerokee DS back to gether and used a continuous bead....no warping and more importantly no Viberation!! i have had this DS spinning 39.5 TSL's on pavement without any problems! i was just as surpised it didnt break as my follow wheeler...

lookes like you did a decent job on your weild tho...she wont be breaking! keep us posted on the SOA progress!

xj dies in water

oh i have a cherokeeo front shaft.... but i'm saving it for after the SOA.... i just needed this as a temporary so i didn't have to stress my chain

awww....now it's making sence...just need to get er out of front wheel drive ehhhh!!!  i actually made the above DS cause of the information i got from you and others about this mod...that is why i was wondering!! you will enjoy that SOA when its done and wonder why the hell anyone ever uses an after market lift kit instead....the ride is awsome!
