Im looking at this 97, 4 banger wrang, its got a engine from a different jeep and (120,000miles on it) and rebuilt transmission clutch and t case 2 years ago. The jeep itself has 180,000 miles on it. I didn’t get to test drive it yet but 1 of the first things I noticed is when I turned the driveshaft by hand it moves freely and turns easily about little more then quarter of a turn and then stops and then I can move it back. Same for the back one also. What can be the problem? What should I look out for in this jeep? Thanks!

how much is said jeep going for? it better be a hell of a deal to buy it with a different motor, with 120k + on it, rebuilt everything, and 180k on the jeep itself? i'd definitely keep in mind that there's a reason for all the repairs and assume the jeep has seen better days.

$3300

The turning of the driveshaft sounds normal to me. Sounds like a $2500 jeep ;)

So i can turn the drive shaft by hand and thats normal? the jeep is on the ground not on a lift.

driveshaft sounds normal to me as well (rotating it)

i'd be concerned if there was side-to-side PLAY in the driveshaft...

well i know my YJ and other YJ i tryed to rotate drive shaft wont budge. I was thinking there maybe something wrong with the axle and thats $$$ but side to side is U joints and thats a cheap fix.

Not necessarily, side to side can also be transfer case output, or pinion bearings.

It sounds like the YJ you advertised in the for sale forum is a more solid Jeep... Why the change?

Oh i love that YJ. Never had a problem with it. thats why i want another one! But i want the newer interior. but the biggist thing i need to have airbags, just in case.

thanks, i dident know that, how much will it move?

Depends on how bad the bearings are, but usually if those are messed up you would know when driving it, lots of loud whining and thunking.
