Lockers or Lift

We were sitting around the campfire having drinks and talking about whether it would be better to take a stock XJ and put lockers or a lift and tires as the first mod. What do you guys all think? Is it really that more useful to have lockers on a stock ride, or better to put a 3" lift and better than stock tires?

Seeing as there were drinks at the same time of course the conversation get all heated. My friends are bigger than me, so I was on the receiving end of the beatdown. What's the consensus (other than I deserved what I got...)?

Better for what, trail riding or cruising around looking cool?
I would say that an XJ with dual lockers and street tires would outperform a lifted and tire'd XJ on the trail.

we were definitely talking about out on the trail. Looking cool is totally out of the question. I think that I won't have to worry about learning how to wear my hat crooked or anything like that soon.

looks like a good thread for me to jump in on. my first planed big mod is a lift and tires. why, for me clearance is a big thing to me. i hate bottoming out on rocks and water bars and whatnot. so far my 30/35 open diffs do me fine. dont get me wrong i do have ARBs in the plan. i just want bigger first.

For me it was the Lift and Tires instead of the lockers first because I new i would be replacing the axels at some point with something stronger. I hate doing things twice (which will be the case on the lift /grumble) so my vote is lift/tires.

Lift and tires. A quality lift will flex better than stock, keeping the tires on the ground more often and negating some (not all) of the need for lockers. Larger more aggressive tires will help keep you moving as the flexy suspension works to keep most of the tires on the ground.

Then weld the rear diff.
