jacking up a yj high enough for SOA install

i couldnt find any pics of my rig when it was on blocks but i send you one that had a similar idea..

A jackall is the most loved and hated tool in the offroad world

it is a jack that works vertically and without a hydrolic clyinder or pump.

there is a pic here http://www.hi-lift.com/agrijack.htm

Oh, a Hi Lift. I have just never heard of a Hi Lift being called a Jack All. :)
Those are some nice jack stands in the picture!!!!!

i took off the tires and went that route.. then when i got the axles off, i put the wheels back on, lifted one side at a time and had someone bolt the wheels on... that was the only help i had in the entire project... you definitely don't have to go as high that way... then once the axles are bolted back on... you can jack from the axle to get high enough to put the wheels back on

her are some pics of my mid progress

it all worked out quite well for being a one man job

like i said. pulling the wheels off is the easiest way. i have done many an axle swap and i've NEVER done one with the wheels on

bench 200?

if you are carryin around an axle, its how much can you deadlift!!!

You guys don't get it, it is way too heavy. There is no other way for me to do this other than with the tires on.

The whole bench press thing is just an example. How do you expect me to lift an axle that low to the ground anyway?

just drag that beast. then get it up on the floor jack somehow. you gotta do it so you might as well figure out a good way. put it up on the floor jack and drag it around, ahve someone balance it while you drag it and then jack it into place.

i dont understand why you guys wouldn't make an axle swap easier by leaving a set of small stock tires on the axle( for my swap i had an extra set of small tires for the axles)....it doesnt take any extra time to lift the jeep an extra foot or so..

it is doable without the tires on the axle but why make something harder than it has to be?

heh, just find some rims at a junk yard, what do you need tires for to just roll it around

it would have been MUCH MUCH more work to get my jeep up another foot rather than just takin the wheels off... as soon as i got the axles out.. i put the wheels back on... not tough at all

Bryan, I used 2 floor jacks and 2 people (my son) to horse the axles around w/o tires. The floor jacks (2-3/4 ton) are from Costco ($80.) or Harbor Frieght. The Jack stands, long 3 ton jobs (4) for 4 points under the frame, I also got from Harbor Frieght ($29. per pair). On a cement floor you'll be able to move them around ok. On suspension work, 2 floor jacks are very handy. You can lift, roll, do anything you want with a floor jack under each end of the axle tubes.

Have fun,

I am DEFINETELY keeping the tires on the axles for this.

I am going to find some railroad ties to use for wood blocks under the jacks and jack stands. Thanks West for the idea.

As for lifting the jeep with jacks, I will put the jacks on railroad ties and a sheet of plywood for the jack to slightly roll as being lifted. I will have my friend do the same for the other side of the jeep so it goes up equally at the same time.

another advantage of taking the wheels off... is that you can actually reach your spring perches.. and your ubolts, and you can work in there... i really don't see a reason for leaving them on

Like I said, over and over, these axles are extremely heavy and not worth the trouble.

No offense, but you either need some bigger arms or some smaller axles.

Just having fun with ya. good luck on the conversion

leaving the tires on also makes it easier to pick up the axle as well... .anyone who has move a front end around knows what it feels like to pinch a hand inbetween the tierod bar and tube...

leaving the tires on also means that one person can move the axle around in case it get in the way  ( if the axle is kicking around in a shop or something)

Anyway we all have our own and uniqic way of doing things...its all about whats easiest for the individual and for me it is leaving the small tires on the axle
