RE: Vegas Bachelor Party aftermath prank (work safe)

Ok so about a year or more ago i replaced my radiator before that i replaced my thremostat and yet im still running hot when its warm. What is still causing my truck to run hot.

On a side note im thinking of replaced my fans with upgraded electric fans and a switch to turn the air conditioning fan on and off will this help to keep it cool. I only heat up when im stopped or going at a real low idle. I want to get this resolved before it really starts to warm up because now i can just drive with the cool air out and that helps cool it off.

thanks for the help

I would not overlook the posibility that your water pump might be bad. One other place to look is the clutch on the fan. If its worn out it won't spin the fan as fast as it should.

or you could put in a colder thermostat. It might not be a solution to your problem, but it couldn't really hurt.

RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: "Sandwhich" or "Sammich&a

Is there a way to see if the fan clutch is wearing out? I already planned on trying to replace that fan with a new electric fan. Also if the water pump was going out would it make sort of a weird clunking noise? I kind of remember reading some post about that. Otherwise maybe that might just be engine knock.

To check the fan clutch run the engine until it is hot, turn on engine. Be careful since the engine will be hot and try to spin the fan. You should find a decent amount of drag trying to spin the fan. If it spins easy it should probably be replaced. I don't know about a water pump clunking but the fan clutch will if its really worn out. I can't recomend the lower thermostate though. its not a fix just a band aide. if there is a problem and you idle long enough it will over heat no matter what temp thermostat you have in there.

Umm.. I think he meant turn the engine OFF.... spinning the fan by hand with it on would be a bad thing. I would suspect the fan clutch.. its an easy repair to do.

if you have a closed coolant system (like my '90), you may also look to replace your coolant overflow bottle. mine didn't keep pressure and would boil over there. I replaced my radiator, t-stat, and coolant to no avail... didn't really get fixed till i replaced that bottle.

It is a fix if his current thermostat is too hot for the vehicle. He never said it was really overheating, just getting hot.

I've seen many people put in the wrong thermostat, which will either cause the engine to run at the wrong temp (either too hot or too cold) or it will be a completely wrong thermostat (like for another vehicle) and will end up getting stuck or failing in other ways.

They're only a couple bucks, which is why I mentioned it.

Sly8795, If I were you I would just ditch the fan and put in an electric one....since you mentioned you were considering going that route anyways.

Another thing, is your coolant level always full, or is it "disapearing" to somewhere?

After that, the only thing left is your water pump.

I always use one of those mechanics stethescopes so that I can listen to things like the water pump to hear if there are any abnormal sounds....which will help you find all sorts of problems (if they're there). It will also make it possible to tell if there's sounds coming from your fan clutch, vs. somewhere else in that area.

If you are not overheating you may be fine.. how do you define "running hot"? Every vehicle will run hotter at low speed on a warm day than it will at highway speed. My ZJ runs about 15 degrees or so hotter on the trail in warm weather than it does at speed or cooler weather. Not enough air moving past the radiator.

If it runs hot at speed, then its not the fan clutch (well that could still be bad but won't cause overheat at speed).. The fan is useless once you get above about 20MPH anyway. If you are running the proper temp T-stat for your year and engine, it could still be a bad T-stat. Also make sure there is no air in the system.. try burping the system (I'm sure there is a post on how to do it somewhere here).

On my 1990 Cherokee, that was my problem also. The coolant overflow cap was bad, and a new cap still did not fix it. The threads on the bottle were worn and would not let the cap get tight enough to hold pressure.

BTW, after I replaced the bottle and cap, I refilled with new coolant, 50/50 mixture with distilled water and then I used one of the coolant additives that reduce surface tension in the coolant and it really did make a difference in the temps. I usually don't fall for fixes in a bottle but this one helps. Also keep in mind that those 4.0s are meant to run pretty warm, around 190 or so in order to run properly and make clean fuel burning etc..

RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: HELP!!! Need opinions from all Jeepz fol

I was running hot, turned out my thermo was to high, put in a 180 and voila! I would suggest the clutch fan and/or water pump.

My jeep usually runs at a little lower about the 210 mark. When it runs hot it starts to go above the 210 mark. I cant remember what thermo I put in. But the truck runs hot when im stopped so maybe it is the fan clutch. When I put the electric fan in place of the belt driven one. Do I have to get a new belt or what happens there with that?

I don't know what temp yours is supposed to be but my 2000 is supposed to run at 210. It says right there though and never goes any higher.

As for the belt you don't need to change it. You will leave the water pump pulley on there. You will just take the fan off the pulley and bolt it back on.

Ok thanks for the info about the belt. I went online and re-read the site i fuond about installing a flex-a-lite #110 electric fan. Looks simple enough.

Thats the problem. Once I hit a stop light or get stuck in city traffic it starts to move above the 210 mark. So far the worst its ever gone is half way between the 210 mark and the next black tick mark. Luckly never totally overheated the engine and I always run my heat to help cool it off but is no fun when its 90 degrees out in the middle of the summer.
