I have a 74 cj5 with a 258 and a manual three speed and was wondering if it would be possible to swap for a four speed manual or would it be too long?? Thanks

Yes, you can put a 4spd in your 5, I have one in mine. Jeep used the t-18 4spd in the cj (77-78 I think), but they are not easy to find. Jeep also used the t-18 behind cherekees and some j-trucks from the 70,s but these will need a new main shaft to fit the cj. the t-176 is a good 4spd from the early 80,s cjs but I dont think it will fit the dana 20 case, but will with an adapter. You can put several dif 4spds in you cj but most will need some modification or an adapter. If you want to buy adapters you can get a ford t-18 from a 2wd truck or NP435(ford), SM465(dodge i think) 4spd. I dont know all of your trany choices and some will require a adapter for the engine and one for the tcase. Try to get one that only needs one adapter, (for the tcase) to save some money. I am currently running a car 4spd in my jeep so they can be put in. Your best bet is to find one from a cj that uses the dana20 tcase so everything bolts up and no adapters are needed. All these 4spd should be about the same size as your current trans. Oh, the t-98 is another early jeep 4spd.

Yes a 4 speed transmission can be used in a CJ without making the rear drive line too short, in fact Jeep used the granny low T18transmission as a factory option in CJs starting in 1972 through the 1979 model year; as such it is the easiest 4 speedswap you can do with your 1974 CJ. TheT18s were only used behind the I6 except for in 1979 when it was also an availableoption behind the 304 V8. There are twoversions of the CJ T18 and shouldn’t be confused with the FSJ T18s as all inall Jeep used around 17 different versions of the T18 over the years. All Jeep T18 both CJ and FSJ were mated tothe Dana 20 transfer case except for the transmissions used the some 1980-81J20 pickup trucks; they were bolted to a NP 208. The input shaft length and output shaftspline counts are the main differences between the transmission versions otherthan the low gear ratio. Note that it is possible to swap in a CJ shortshaft for a FSJ long shaft.

The first CJ version of the T18 has a 4.01 low gear and wasused from 1972 to sometime in 1976 (no one seems to know the exact date ornumber) when the second version began production. It had a 6.32 low and remained the factoryoption through the 1979 model year. The AMCI6 and V8s all use the same engine to bell housing bolt pattern so the bellhousings can be mixed and matched as needed to mate to the proper transmission.

Also there is the option of using a Ford T18 as well but themost common transmission used in the swap is a two wheel drive version thatwill require an adaptor to mate up to the Dana 20.
