help which tranfer case fits in my 2.5l 89 yj ax5 transmission

i got a bad transfer case and was wondering if i need to buy the same one i have a np231.but i want to know if i can put one from a cherokee with a six silinder give some answer please.thanks.[addsig]

No. Most 6cyl. transfer cases have a 23 spline input shaft, and yours is 21 spline. Stick with a 4banger transfer case, preferably from a Jeep with the same type transmission so you know the input length is correct.

There is more work involved, but you can swap input shafts from your stock transfer case into a case with a 23-spline input. Requires disassembly of the transfer case.[addsig]

Plus that the cherokees transfer cases are clocked different than YJ or TJ cases. It will hang down too low to work right. To use a case from a cherokee in a YJ you will have to redrill holes in the transmission tailhousing to raise the transfer case up to where it is supposed to be.[addsig]

Yeah...either that or get a tailhousing from a cherokee and put in on your transmission.[addsig]

I think you'd have to dissassemble the entire transmission to replace the tailshaft. Never heard of Cherokee tranfer cases being clocked any differently than Wranglers.[addsig]
