Hazard lights - relay?

I have to get my jeep inspected this week (NJ) but when my hazards are on, the back right will not flash (well at least 90% of the time). Sometimes it does flash properly. Anyway, I checked the lamp and all is well. I checked the wiring to the lamp and it is new, no corrosion nor is a wire loose. Works fine when used as a blinker.

I looked in my haynes manual and it talks of a hazards relay but I don't know where the hell it is.

I forgot to mention, my flasher switch and blinker knob are a little tricky, sometimes the blinkers (the handle feels sluggish and won't 'click' all the way), so I turn the flashers on, then off and it fixes the blinker handle.

I think it could also be a problem with the blinker/hazard unit in the steering column, I have a replacement on the way/

Can someone please tell me where to locate the relay for the hazards?

Hi,

First it would be nice to know what model year Jeep you have :wink:.

I'm guessing it's a TJ? If so, I believe the hazard relay is in the relay cluster/fuse block under the hood by the battery.

Does the front right lamp work in "hazard" mode?

Sorry, you're right... it's a 98 TJ SE.
No, not in that cluster (as far as I can tell). Or at least it's not labeled that way according to the diagram on the underside of the lid.

The Haynes manual says something about the 'hazard/blinker' being combined in a single unit. In section 12-4 it talks about removing the knee blocker, reach through the opening in the instrument panel and unscrew the combination flasher bracket and disconnect it from the wiring harness connector. Could this be where the relay is?

Seems odd that it wouldn't be with the rest of the relays.

Anyway, I ordered a replacement blinker/hazard switch set for the steering column, to solve some of the other issues...perhaps this might solve all the issues.

Sounds like the turn signal switch - turn on hazards and try to get the passenger rear to mess up again - when it does, fiddle with the turn signal lever and see if it clears up the problem - if that switch is not returning to center after a turn properly or cruddy contacts inside, then it could create your problem - specially when you noted that it felt kinda funky anyway LBR

I thought so as well, I ordered a new combination switch unit to install on the steering column, will see if that solves the issue. I get the feeling it might.

will post results when I am able to do the swap..

Anything I should be aware of when doing this swap? Hoping not to inadvertantly trigger the air bag (if that's possible)
