Having trouble getting the jeep started

Hey everyone, my dad has an 87 Jeep Wrangler Laredo and he's having some trouble getting it started. He put a new starter in and that seemed to make the start smooth for a couple of days, but it started doing the same thing again. He then figured out he needed to put spacers on the starter. He did that, and it is working better, but it still has some problems starting from time to time. I'm thinking there could be something else going on with it, but really have no ideas what it could be. Any ideas to what it could be, and ways to fix it would be great....

Thanks

Could you be more specific with the description of the symptom?,Grinding, hesitation or intermittent no start?.

It's grinding alot... and then the gas pedal has to be pumped alot to keep it on... after it gets going it runs fine though.

okay... well idk if this is a stupid question. but where can i get shims at?

It doesn't make sense. Why would you have to pump it to start it. Grinding could mean it needs to shimmed or the ring gear on the flywheel is worn or it has shifted on the flywheel.
