okay im new to the whole jeep thing... in the winter its better to have a hard top... but it costs anywhere from like $1,500 and up for a '97 should i look into saving up to get one or just forget it?

Just forget it. I've had my soft top through 2 winters, and some downright chilly days and nights (down to 10 below with 20 below windchills), and I've been just fine with it. The heater in the YJ really cranks out the BTU's, and I'm always very comfy inside during the winter. I would bet a newer TJ would be just as good or better, as far as the heater goes.

I swore I would never waste my money on one until I started car pooling with a guy who had one. I bought a used one soon after and loved it. That Jeep is long gone but when I looked for the one I own now I was sure to find one that had a hard top for the winter months.

Do you need one? No, but they sure make the Jeep a nicer ride in the winter... warmer, quieter, easier to knock snow and ice off, and it makes the soft top last longer not being on the Jeep all winter - especially if you live in an area where they salt the roads like I do.

I'd look for a used one. So long as the glass and tailgate are good your fine. You can get new seals easy enough and they are a cinch to paint.

by the way, now is the time to buy a used one. When it starts getting cold they go for a lot more money.

i've seen decent TJ hardtops for as low as $750, they are out there.

I don't think hardtops are near as practical since the heaters in jeeps have improved so much over the years.

Bah don't encourage her it's just another thing i'll have to put on.

Oh, yeah, wrangl3rBaBe97, you definitely need a hard top for your Jeep. Yup, without a doubt, you really do need to get one. Uh huh, you should definitely get one. Heck, ya might as well get two, just to be sure. Get different colors so you can change it every other day to suit your mood! Oh, yeah, if I were you, I'd for sure get half a dozen different colors. :D

ha ha ha lets all make fun of the cheerleader in not stupid im just a little slower than others... but thats okay! so i'd say that would be a big NO on hard tops... thanks guys!lol

I have both and use them seasonally.

I do love the hard top in Winter and the ability to become a rain prepared convertible in summer...

Hard Tops makes great dog houses when you take them off and sit them by the barn - you can store stuff on top and the dog stays dry. Try the soft top on a cold day before you buy one. IMHO you don't need one plus I just like the top down on impulse.
