i have an 04 grand cherokee with a 4.0 liter and at heres the problem. got up this morning and it wouldn't start. cranks but not start after looking around for a little noticed that the security light was on and not going off. when u turn the key on it comes on then goes off but comes back on steady. tried a couple of things i found on the net like using the key to open the door checked connections and took the neg. terminal off and pulled the pcm fuse for five minutes then put them back on pressed and held the ct and reset buttons on the display and then turned on the jeep and let go it said self test passed. im at a loss with it any help would be great

Did you try unlocking the door with the key on the passenger side or liftgate?.Thoery: if the switch on the driver side failed, then unlocking it with the key on the driver side door would not work on the security bypass however, IF the passenger side door unlocks and disables the security sytem then it would be safe to confirm that the issue maybe found on the driver door switch. One thing that came into mind is, IF the intrusion system has been triggered, with the (gray) key in the ignition and on the run position, the SKIM system should recognize the key and validate the ignition start. With this being said, IF the key's transponder chip inside the key went bad, then this will acurrately describe the symptoms you have stated. In this case, you will need a new key and would have to have it programmed before you can use it. Another option is to have the SKIM scanned for DTC's and this will further give you a more accurate idea of whats going on in the security system module.

there is no spot for a key on the passenger door or the hatch. i found out that my brother inlaw used the jeep the other day and tried to start it with a key that didn't have a chip in it. it ran for 3 seconds then shut off. he then used the other key it ran great for a day and a half now this. think that might have something to do with it

That'll do it. I'm assuming that the key your brother used is a valet key only?. Try inserting the programmed chip key and turning it to the run position for 1 minute then key off. Do this 3 times and see if the skim validates the key. If not, you will need to get that module reset with a scantool to erase the event in the module.

took it to the dealer they said it was the immobilizer and that it needed to be replaced as for the key i'm not sure i got it with the jeep and its black thats all i can tell u. i know i"m taking off the key ring and keeping it at the house from now on so this does not happen again. thanks for all the help.

The black key is only good for opening the door in case you lock the skim key in the vehicle. Its good to have only for that type of emergency.
