Gear confusion

I'm looking at stuffing some larger tires under my reaper and started looking around at some of the different drivetrain companies. One company said I can go up to a 3.73 ring 'n pinion before I swap out the carrier...yet another company said I can only go to 3.54 (?) gear. I currently have 3.07's and would like to spend as little on the whole process as possible (as usual). What's the max size that i can put in there? Oh! I had another question. Can I run a 31 x 1050 x 15 on a 15x10? Thanks guys!

First of all, I'd get 4.10's if switching out R&P. You wont notice much going to 3.54 and if you go to 3.73, you might as well go to 4.10 and be done with it. It would be cheaper (probably) to just get a set of axles from the 'yard that already have 4.10's in em and then sell the 'yard back your old axles. And to answer your basic question, yes, you'll have to change the carrier if going to 3.73 (or higher).

Second, you "could" run 10" wide tires on 10" wide rims, but you'd lose a bead very easily and your rims would be VERY susceptible to rock/curb rash. 15x8's would be better. I run 33x10.50 on 7" wide rims. Not un-common. However, 10" on 10" is very uncommon... except on ricers.

This is always a debate, I thought I knew the answer but I'm not sure if I am right anymore cause it's been a while. I got all my info from Randy's Ring and Pinion. They know thier stuff inside and out and will hook you up with what you need for the type of wheelin you plan on doing. Get thier number from www.ring-pinion.com and give them a call. They helped me out tons. If I were you I would get the tires on there first and see how it does. The 3.07s will probably do pretty well with the 31s in my opinion.

Yeah, I know... I hate openning up this can of worms (I know it's been asked before but my memory is worth crap).

Thanks C... I figured it was about that simple with the 15x10 question, just wanted a second opinion. Joopin' that's the only place I haven't called yet. I'll give them a call later today. I don't think it'll be too big of a problem, but I really want to keep everything proportionate for gas mileage reasons. Thanks guys! Keep it coming!

Brand New Radiator for Jeep TJ with no A/C

15x10 too boo coo for 10.50's.

Definitely keep your rim size the same. A 31x10.50 is not a big step. Try it and see how it does then if you want to swap, do like mentioned before and nab an entire set of axles from a Jeep shop or junkyard. You can get a set from a 4 cylinder that has 4.10's already in it. It will only take half a day to swap the axles and then you're back on the road. Probably less money, depending on who you get them from.

they said you can only go to 3.54 because your current carrier will only hold 3.73 or lower... you can switch carriers and put anything in there... 3.73 will be fine.. you don't want to rev too high... you'll waste too much gas if you go too low... depending on how you drive.... you want to select the right gears to keep you in a good operating range at your most common cruise speed

The reason you got conflicting info on the carrier breaks is because they are both right. The D30 and D35 carriers break at a different ratio, meaning you can install a certain lower ratio in both axles and possibly only have to change one carrier. I don't remember the exact break, but if you go 4.10 you'll need to replace both carriers.

Carrier breaks for the Wrangler axles:
D35 3.31 & down / 3.55 & up
D30 3.54 & down / 3.73 & up

So if you go from 3.07 to 3.54/3.55, you'll need a new D35 carrier but not a new D30 carrier. 3.73 and lower gears will require 2 new carriers.

2.5L 5speed jeeps came with 4.10 gears, and 2.5L autos have 3.73, so it's a great source for used gears.

if you are gonna go with 4.10... just get some complete 4 cylinder axles.. much easier to swap
