Fuel tank sending unit interchange?

Okay, i decided to get a tank from a 91+ YJ for my 4.0 swap instead of going through the hassle of inline pumps.... anyway the only luck i had at the yard today was a tank out of a 92 2.5, (15 gal i think, but the filler hoses were cut, so i think a ghetto "20 gal" mod was done. correct me if im wrong). I know that the sending units have different ohm ranges for the gauges, but are they the same design and separate from the fuel pumps in FI tanks? I'd like to use the sending unit out of my 20 gal tank and stick it in the new one, so my gauges will still work.

Thanks in advance and if im misinformed about anything i just said, set me straight.

Even if the 20 gallon mod was performed, the guage will read the ohms. correly, all jeep's used the same sending unit's in the YJ's. But if the 20 gallon mod was done to a 15 gallon tank, the guage will just rear full longer

Isn't your '89 tank a steel tank? The '92 is plastic and I'm not sure how much the sending unit attachment area changed between the two styles of tanks. The '92 sending unit/fuel pump are all one unit.

Your '92 15gal. tank with the filler tube trimmed is the same as the '92 20gal. tank from the factory, only difference is the 15gal. tank sending units will read the fuel level at a different range.

Why not get a '92+ sending unit/fuel pump for your conversion?

the 89 tank is poly

i have yet to test the pump. if it works, its staying in.... if not ill get the 20gal setup

The 2.5L and 4.0L sending units are essentially the same except for the range of the guage arm, considering both are '92+. I'm not sure if that's what you were asking in your initial post or not.
