Front locker

Ok, we have covered this topic before, but I just need to know for sure. I am regearing at the end of the summer, and I am thinking about putting in a front locker (YJ D30). If I put in an ez locker or lockright, will I experience any negative effects (i.e. steering) in two wheel drive? Keep in mind I still have the vaccum disco system. Also, which one would yall use? Ez locker or lockright?

i would say to lock the rear first

SOA brakeline rumor

No problems if the disconnect is working properly. Ya might want to consider a posi-lock - over $150 or so from a store or you can make it yourself for peanuts!

You won't feel any negative effects of any locker when in 2wd in a YJ, the vacuum disconnect at the front axle ensures this.

Are you set on locking the front first? The best offroad performance when locked in only one axle comes from locking the rear.

I would have to agree with bounty on the rear being the best for locking first. If the rear is locked many times you will not even need the front wheels engauged. Also go ahead and hit up the bicycle shop in your area and build a cable posi lock for the front end. Some of the best money you will ever spend on a YJ. tug

To answer your question and not to give you my opinion!

With the lock right, the only negative effect you will receive is when you are on concrete, turning lock to lock (pulling into a parking spot) even with the front completely disconnected, you will hear some clicking noises and they will be pretty loud! but that is normal. but the benefts will out way the down falls!

I would like to lock the rear but I am a little hesitant about locking up the D35. Eventually I will do an axle swap, so as little money dumped into that axle as possible is what I am looking to do. Or should I just say the hell with it and blow the damn D35 to pieces with a locker and my 33's? EZ Locker or Lockright?

TH400 or Torqueflite 727

Maybe you just spend the money towards another axle for the rear end. Like an 8.8 out of an explorer or a dana 44.

Well the front axle is in dire need of work, both axle seals are shot and I need new gears BAD! Is the 8.8 tough to due because of the brake set up?? I have always been interested in doing the 8.8 swap but the brake line setup has scared me away...

I guess I live at the end of the world or something. I know of lots of people that lock the front, but slap a limited-slip unit in the back so they can still get jiggy wit it in two wheel drive without so many worries of parts breakage and loss of control. Not my style, but I understand the thinking. When your blasting across a muddy field or racing down the beach when the cops aren't looking, a rig with a limited slip and a good driver can walk all over the rig with the locker.

yeah.. i just realized that i said "lock the front first" in my previous reply... i did mean rear... i edited it to fix

some idiot, and his lies

that d35 should live with 33's and a locker...i just wouldnt recommend going with any bigger of a tire. lots of guys in my area have welded dana 35's here. couple are even running 36 inch swampers too....however there is mostly mud around here and not too much in the way of rockcrawler. dependes on your terran and driving habits i guess. :?

OT: party gone wrong.

That does it. The rear is getting locked. If it breaks its time for an axle swap, or everybodys favorite, the super 35

i might.. just MIGHT weld my d35 after the soa... not sure yet.. depends on how it works with the lift

Laneiac,
What motor do you have? I only have the 2.5L and plan on locking my D35. I have 33's also. I think that having a rear locker will decrease my chance of breakage because I won't have to "run and bump" over obstacles. Of course, my tubes will still be weak, but hopefully I won't use it as a landing gear too often.

drive line and rear leaf ??

I have a 4.0l, but it seems like your right about not having to use momentum to overcome obstacles. A truss is a good idea on the 35...

i have an detroit ez locker in the front axle of my cj7 and i like it, no complaints
thats what i would use for the front and just weld the rear
