Front Gear Burning!

Hello,
I was driving my Jeep home from the airport and didnt realize that it was in 4wd. I smelled the differential fluid burning and pulled off into a gas station. I got it back into real wheel drive and procedded home. I think the gasket blew around the front cover because of a small leak. Since I have it back in real wheel drive does the front differential turn when not it use? Should I open up the front and see if I did any damgage? Need some help.....Thanks!!!!

RE: yj parts

it depends what type of jeep you have and whether you lock out hubs or not....i would pull the cover off anyway and inspect the gears, replace the gasket with rvt sealant and put fresh 80-90w gear oil in her.

RE: New engine and transmission for my 84 CJ7

definately change the differential fluid. That will give you a chance to look it all over and re-seal the cover too.

What year, model?

RE: Want a nice aluminum plate for the front of your jeep?

One last question. Thanks for being so helpful. I noticed that there is a vent tube that comes out of the front gear housing and comes up through the engine compartment and up by the radiator. Should this tube easily pull right out of the gear housing? Because it does. It just pulls right out and there is a hole there. This sound right? also, there is some fluid leaking around where it goes in. Just doesnt seem right.

The clamp is on. It's just that it pulls out of the hole with ease. Just slides out? Should it come out that easy?
