If that's a word... anyway, the weather is getting warmer here in NJ and the hard top will come off soon... I have a soft top but never put it on since I bought the jeep about 3 months ago... my question is... after installing the soft top, does it just fold down to the back? or do you have to take the top off altogether when going topless? I can't remember seeing any bunched up top on the back of any wranglers during the summer... I just wasn't looking for that, I was too busy thinking how I wanted a wrangler!! Anyway, I will probably have the top off or down most of the summer, I was even thinking of making the interior waterproof if thats possible... so I can just keep the top off all the time. Its pretty risky to do in jersey though. Any thoughts on all this?? Thanks.[addsig]

Ok I always took my canvas off and left it at home and bunge corded my bows up in place to be able to quick cover in case of rain. Doors off and back flap rolled up was my major running set up in wet weather. Bikini top in the heat to keep the sun off. There are several ways for summer runnig all fun and all cool. My hard top is a two piece targa top so I can leave the back shell on and run kinda like a t top. I love jeep tops there is no end to your choices. Good luck man Tug[addsig]

Welcome to the world of Jeeps...

Not too sure about the Wranglers, but I know on my CJ's (the 5's, the 7'2 and the 8) the tops can be folded down on the rear tailgate area. All of my tops are made by Bestop. It takes a little doing to get the knack of folding one down like that but it can be done. Usually you just unzip the side windows and fold the inward, then start lowering the top bows and the top back on itself (folding it as best you can as you go).

They even make a top and bow cover (similar to a convertible "boot" on a car) that you can add if ya want...

But... as said in an earlier reply there are so many tops and so many ways justpick what works for you... Personally I just leave the bikini top in the Jeep (not on it) so if it does rain (and the passengers whine about it) I can at least put a partial cover on (that and it takes all of 5 minutes to put the bikini top on).

Till later,

The first couple of times you do it, it´s like hearding canary´s. Going on, is some ruffer than taking it off. A little zipper wax seems to help. Folding across the plastic windows is to be avoided.[addsig]

I have an 02' TJ and the top folds down in the back. And its a pain in the ass too.the front and rear windows come off seperatly and then you can fold it back after unhookin it fromt he door jams. Once its off then you need to unscrew the door jams and snap them off. But I have gotten good at it, it only takes me 15 minutes to take it off completely now. :) [addsig]

Well I don't have any zippers... I have a set of full doors and no halves, I wish I did. Since the guy with the TJ can fold down a top, I can only assume that I can. the 91 has the rear rollbar that goes down at an angle unlike the TJ and late YJs... so if they can clear it I can. I will just have to wait and see when spring comes I guess... Those bikini tops sound like a good idea though. I think I'll get one. Thanks for the info. :-D [addsig]

I got an 89 YJ and I have the Replace-a-Top by Bestop, it's basically the factory top. Yes, you can fold the top down. First roll up the rear window and secure it with your button staps. Then remove your rear-side windows, not folding the plastic, like mentioned above. Then open you doors and bring the roof down. Tuck everything behind your rear bench seat. If you don't have a rear seat, remove the top completely and get a bikini top, or do this anyway. :-D [addsig]

I do the same as hi_c. With the TJ's I remove the black frame around the doors also. And the doors. Don't
like doors.

Speaking of all this reminded me, does any one know of a bikini top for the TJ that works without the stupid,
fscking black frame/rails? How hard would it be to make my own?

Cooper.

Thanks for the info guys, but to any of you actually go topless the whole summer? There is a ford truck in my town that has no top on it all year around!!! I would like to do that for the summer but of course I would have to weatherproof everything, I wouldn't even know where to start! If anyone does this I sure would like to know how to go about it. Of course I would have to get rid of the rug and put a hurculiner in it, plus get a stereo w/ removable face (getting one anyways) The seats are vinyl so thats covered... but the dash and stuff?? If it seems like too much trouble I will just forget it. Would like to know your thoughts though![addsig]

Where I live it rains alot. I think we rival seattle for least amount of sunny days. But riding topless inthe jeep is the saving grace we all have. Here is what I recommend. Pull the carpet. But a Bikini top and tonouau (I cant spell...it covers the back seat) and some plastic doors. The top and doors easily come off and fit under the cover and you are free wheeling topless all summer long. Thats all we ever do..[addsig]

I went topless and doorless for two an a half years. It only rained three times a year there. Even then, it
wasn't much. Also was topless in Cali for a while during some rain. The only problems I ever had was my
turn signal acted up once (clicked really fast and wouldn't light), but was fine when it dried. Stereo didn't seem
to have much trouble (salt air killed it, not rain). I kept hearing the strangest sounds though. It always came
from my right and sometimes to the rear. It was this awful, grating, high-pitched whine when it rained. It went
away when I ditched the girlfriend... <grin>

Oh yeah, that's on a 97 TJ w/ no A/C.

I would worry about salt air more than rain especially if you have a bikini or toneeuaoeuao cover. Sometimes I
would go away for a few weeks and when I came back I had (no cht!) rolling sand dunes about a half inch to
an inch high on the floor. Geee, my own little piece of the gulf...

Topless all summer really sounds good but last June caught in the rain, with the top up and tight but no doors I left them at home. Some 65 odd miles away from hom at a big Antiques Auction. Not working just buying and haveing fun so in shorts and a tshirt and tennis shoes. Up comes one of them wild out of nowhere Tennessee Thunder Storms. Father n law with me and we head out home. Every tractor trailer in the world was intent on passing us. Every big puddle on the road was right out side our doors with a fast car driving in it! We were soaked and running the heater on high just to keep from shivering. Your windshield wipper do not wipe the inside of your windshield so keep that in mind! Like I said early if it aint raining it is so blasted hot you cant stand it. At least a bikini top is needed in the summer. But go for it and good luck. Take your carpet out and store it. Cover your seat in a manner that you can live with and carry extra clothes and a towel or two! It will be an adventure Tug[addsig]

Hey Coop, I believe Bestop make one that does not use the door surround. At least the one I got doesn't.[addsig]

joopin whatr part of jersey you from ??
I live by atlantic city, I would leave my top off all summer but wife says "no the kids will get ear infections from the wind" :-? I just put my windows and door tops in the house/yard and fold the top down in the back behind the seat, all tops can do that. I go fishing with some buds I take the top and rails off, it takes practice to do it quick about 10-15 mins all hardware removed. But its much eaiser than trying to get the sand out of the folds and zippers. :-D [addsig]

I'm about an hour and a half north of you Idratherbefishing... I live right next to Asbury Park on the shore, about 2 blocks from the beach... ya its nice. Since I am near the ocean I may have to take the salty air into consideration like someone mentioned earlier... I think I'm gonna get a bikini top and give it a shot though... what the hell. Maybe I should do a couple practice runs with the soft top too... I should have someone time me. Thanks guys... Oh and I have heard stories of the pines down south, I would love to go there, I hear there are some mean machines there!!! I gotta make mine mean before I can go down though, don't want to look like a chump![addsig]

The woods down here can be a lot of fun, if your out for a nice cruise or you have a ford trying to follow, you can take it easy and come out clean- or you can leave the canvas on and try to guess the color on your way out- the clay is a bit hard to get off.
But most of my time is spent driving to/from brigantine fishing, with the wife kids or both.or alone(my me time) we'll have to get together some day. I work out of King of Prussia. [addsig]
