Engine Noise

He mentioned replacing the bolts because if they were that loose, they could have wiggled around quite a bit causing damage to the threads...which means it could easily come loose again. Plus, you don't want to hurt the threads in the flywheel, but I doubt that will happen in this instance.

It's just a good idea to start over with new ones, and put a little thread locker on them too to make sure they stay in there good and this doesn't happen again

Glad you figured it out though!!

I mentioned that the bolts should be replaced because they are probably fatigued from the many years of stress (being torqued) and heat. Many-A-gearhead thinks that it is lock washers or lock nuts that keep everything tight. To an extent, that is right, but bolt stretch when torqued is the main factor that keeps everything together. Your most creditable engine builders will torque rod bolts by measuring the critical stretch of that bolt while being torqued rather that the "click" or "beep" from the torque wrench. Old bolts fatigue and have very little stretch left in them. If you don't want to worry 'bout them again, replace them with NEW ones. A little bit of Locktite would not hurt either, as 88Wrangles had mentioned prior. I would use the "blue" Locktite in this application instead of the "red." Glad my prior experience of loose bolts could shine thru here. LBR

Possibly something rattling around the flywheel, like a rock kicked up from the trail or perhaps a piece of metal from somewhere within or a bolt or nut? Sounds like my old Datsun PU.....a bolt came out of the flywheel and would occasionally get jostled up into the flywheel and make a heckuva racket.....finally took off the inspection cover and dug it out with a magnetized screwdriver.

Guess I'll just go out in the garden and eat worms......<sniffle>........
