Dana 44 question

can anyone tell me if the dana 44's front and\or rear, used two different sized carriers...like how the dana 30 and 35 used one sized carrier for all ratios under 3.07 and another for all rations over 3.07. the reason i ask is i am looking to buy a pair of axles out of a waggoneer and i want to make sure that i get a carrier that will hold 4.88 gears. thanks all.

First, the D30 and D35 carrier sizes do not cut-off at the same point, for one it's 3.55 and up, the other is 3.73 and up, so if you had 3.55 gears stock and wanted 4.10, you'd have to get one new carrier.

The d44 cutoff should be the same, front or rear.

ummmm yeah i understood that part which was why i said over and under ratios....lol...so in order to fit 4.88 gears in waggy dana44's i do need to find a set with the approperate carrier...right...also should there be anything ielse i should look for when purchasing waggy axles?

Make sure your rear Waggy D44 has a centered diff, many were Quadratrac with an offset rear diff.

Make sure your front Waggy D44 has the driver's side diff, the majority had a pass. side diff.

Still dont have my jeep back

I'm in the same boat here. I found a D44 out of a '90 Wagoneer with a ratio of 3.55 but I would like to get 4.11s or 4.56 in there eventually. The guy at the junkyard where I found it said they used the same size carrier in all the Waggys... I don't want to go spend $450 if I cant change the ratio!

When I installed mine I had to buy new carrier's to put 4:56's. carrier's are cheap compared to the gear change. Some front 44's also have the vacuum activated shift fork attached. Plan on replacing this because most used ones don't work. I removed mine and positioned the sleeve to engage both axels on the right side and placed a 3/8" allen wrench in the groove of the sleeve and welded it to the housing. the wrench is hardened and the gear oil keeps the friction down. One day I'll get a one piece axel.
