Another thing I was wondering, is if the 97 came with the option of having a dana 44. I'm guessing I have a Dana 44, because all the pictured I pull up of the Dana 35's have the rubber plug. Mine just has the square dreain bolt?

Some 35 have a screw in plug also if you have an aftermarket cover it will have the screw type.

D44's were not available in the 97 model year. some 97's with 98 build dates might have a D44, but very unlikely

if you have a bolt and the diff is not round, you probably have a dana 44.

It was an upgrade option and usually come on sahara's

Check the numbers on diff and it should be able to find out the gear ratio and if you limited slip.

Good Luck

Not in 97. as previously stated, some 1997 VINed jeeps had the D44 as an option, but the build dates would have been early 98. 98 and on, the D44 rear was standard equipment on most sahara's, an option on sports, and never available in a 4cyl jeep.
