collectors item perhaps?

The thought has passed through my mind that one day perhaps 20 or 30 years from now our cj s and yj s , will become collectors items. I think this because jeep has butchered the look of the jeep in it's newer models. Kinda like the 65 Mustang, everybody thinks it's cool, the last of the true jeep look is what everyone likes.Makeing our jeeps the last of the breed . What ya think?

genny ,

only thing about that I don't need to wait 20/30 years
my 54 waited 57 years and its already collectable

I can understand where you are coming from. Sometimes I think Chrysler can never please jeepers. When the CJ came out I'm pretty sure the old guard thought it wad an embarrassment to the original GP Vehicle of WWII. When they went to square headlights in the YJ, CJ owners probably became upset. I know for a fact when the TJ came out on 96, the buzz was the comeback of the round headlamps. I think the JK (although I'm not a fan of) does have the old school look with the round headlamps and parking lights beneath them.
The bottom line is everything is about forward progression. That is why GP vehicles went from no roll bar to the roll bars we see now. Are You going to start whining about the air bags in the newer jeeps as well.
As for me I am very happy with my LJ.y next build will hopefully be an MJ (commanche), and maybe a TJ/Brute conversion.
Hopefully Chrysler can make you happy.

It's a JEEP thing!

Darn, looking at your ride makes me wish that we was neighbors and friends .I'd gladly talk ya into and help ya get rid of the diamond plate and fabricate it back to it's original look.F'n A . I imagine ya can go damn near anywhere with that machine. But your probably like me,gonna use a jeep for what it was ment for,and to heck with the shine.

i was also disappointed at the time when the cj7 came out, changing the look of the jeep. But all is good, just gonna go to bed and cry in my pillow cause I dont have 54cj3b's jeep.

I agree! I love my YJ. The fewer electronics and modern upgrades the better for me when it comes to my Jeep.

X2....
Here is a pic I think you will enjoy...
(yes, sad but true, i actually took the time to make it....)

........I think this because jeep has butchered the look of the jeep in it's newer models.......

Speaking as a TJ owner (also got a YJ), government regulations had a lot to do with the "butchering". The TJ dash has got to be one of the ugliest things ever created (hey, gotta fit in the air bags!!!). Now the JK, that's a different story (a 2WD Wrangler??!?!?!).

It's hard to say what "everyone" likes. I personally like the look of the TJ and the JK, and according to the sales numbers the new Wrangler is making alot of people happy.

You know, I text a friend the other night about a '44 MB Jeep on ebay that was very soild looking and had a buy it now price for $1750.00. I said I can't believe a '44 model convertable anything that was that soild was that cheap! I mean price a '46 ford or chevy convertable that is soild enough that you don't have to jack it up and put a new one under it. You won't touch one for under 5grand. ( I'm talkin' a fixable project ) I talked to some guys that restore Jeeps (mainly CJ-7's) for resale the other day. They told me that Jeeps were the only vehicle that didn't take a hit in value during the economic downturn. They said that Hemmings did a 6 page article on Jeeps saying that they actually increased in value when everything else went down. I love my rusty old CJ-5. If the world appreciates my taste cool, if not maybe they just don't get it!

Will they be collector items, probably, will they be valuable, probably not, not in the sense that if you bought a 1969 COPO Yenko Camaro new for $3000, it is now worth $1 milllion. definately not, no way.

reason being, jeep produces a lot of vehicles with long production runs, the CJ5 which only had one major redesign, but was pretty much unchanged from the 50's till the 80's, we had 10 years of CJ7's, YJ's, TJ's and even the JK is now 5 years old. That is a lot of jeeps, the sheer number of them do not lend themselves to being overly valuable.

Also adding to the lack of value is that you can pretty much build a jeep from a catalog. almost every last part is availble to build one from scratch, this drives down the value of original vehicles.

I recently ran into a guy who was selling his recently restored CJ2A that was pretty much built from a catalog with Japanese parts, he was asking $9000, I tried to haggle him down to about $4000 that I though it was worth, and one line he said that stuck out in my mind, "this is a super rare jeep, you will not find another one out there" I told him, not really, because any fool with the internet and a credit card can build this jeep for about $4000.

i don't think they'll be collector's items either because of how many were made. some years, yes, had less then others and some rarer models but still.

like the yj with that renegade body kit will be worth more then regular yjs because they body kit was so disliked that people took it off and tossed it so finding one that came original on the jeep is going to make it rarer. or, maybe an original maroon with black interior 87 laredo? mine was that till some jerk painted it black on only the outside. might've been worth something in the long run, in its original colors and options but not now, now its just a poorly resprayed 87 wrangler with cruise control and ac

There is something to be said for that maroon / black Laredo package from the 80's.... My second jeep(although not an 87) had that package..
I am putting this pic of it below for 2 reasons... 1) some people may not have ever seen the pkg we are referring to...
2) others may enjoy looking at an old school Laredo
NONE of which are to make you feel bad that the previous owner painted over yours .....;-)

Does yours have the silver/gray trim on the seats? Ever considered having it painted the original color? You can buy the stripes/lettering .... Not for "value"... Just because you seem to really like the maroon... Just a thought...

i always think of repainting it back to the original colors because i hate when people do halfass jobs on changins the colors and also, that marron looks nice. (another guy has an 87 in the original paint and it looks so good) no, mine has the all black interior. seats, bar covers, dash, the only thing not black is the center of hte steering wheel.
