Check Engine Light Pt. II

After disconnecting my battery and resetting the codes, the "Check Engine" light went off. After about 30 minutes of driving, it came back on. I repeated this process twice, before caving in and going to the shop. They ran a diagnostics test and determined that the O2 sensor activated the light. However, according to the mechanic, the sensor seemed to be in good shape so he reset the computer codes. This was well and good until I pulled into my driveway and guess what came back on?!? So now I'm looking at about $275.00 in repair costs to replace this thing. Any thoughts? Do you think it could be the electrical system shortin' out? BTW-it's a '97 Wrangler TJ. I'm open to suggestions, but please hurry with the reply as I've gotta go back to the shop Friday monring at 10am! HELP PUT MY MIND AT EASE AND TELL ME THIS ISN'T SOMETHING TO GET IN A TWIST ABOUT!!!!

what is your mileage?

Perhaps the O2 is bad.

last time you had a tune up?

or the throttle body cleaned?[addsig]

It's got about 76,000 miles on it. I had it tuned up about 6 months ago. I'm pretty sure it's the O2 sensor since those things don't last forever. Agree?

It´s been my experience that when the O2 sensor starts to go out, it usually acts up at highway speeds. I don´t know the TJ per say, but changing the O2 sensor isn´t a very big job. One last thing to look at, have your mechanic check the radiator for bubbles, if there is a small head gasket leak and a little coolant gets in the cylinders, it will make the O2 senor give bad readings. One other thing to look at is the exhaust manifold, they sometimes crack, but they are usually really hard to inspect thoroughly. It´s usually easier to wait for a really cold morning and look for the leak. Lastly I have a hillbilly buddy, that had an intermitant check engine light, I asked him if it was fixed he said YUP I took out the bulb. As long as it´s running good, maybe you should wait until the next smog inspection and hope it craps out all together then it will be easier to find the problem.
