Changing Spark plugs

I want to change my spark plugs out in my 95 yj wrangler? I have been told not to use certain kinds especially bosch. Is this true, and if so what kind should i go with? Also should i buy performance plug wires or stick with the normal wires? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

i use bosch wires and bosch platinum 4 plugs in my 99 tj 2.5 L and i has 146000 KMs on the engine and i havent had any problem.

Several years ago I changed spark plugs in my 2.5L Jeep YJ. I got the Bosch plugs and double checked the gap. They were terrible. The Jeep would run rough and not idle. I went back to Champion plugs and never had another problem.

I do not work on many gas engines, but I know of no bad issues with Bosch plugs.
trailjeep what do you mean the gap was terrible? Did you try to just install plugs straight out of the box. This may be an old school thing but NEVER assume plugs come pre gapped from the factory, they all should be gapped manually before installing them.

Thanks guys for the info! How about the autolite brand would that be a bad choice?

No. The gap was fine. I used my feeler gauge and set them to .035. The Bosch plugs themselves were terrible. The Jeep would run rough with them. I went back to Champion plugs and all problems went away.

I belong to several Ford truck boards, 'cause that's what I drive, the Jeep is really for my daughter. Anyway, there are well-documented problems with Bosch multi-electrode plugs in Fords. So that may be where that info came from. The late-model Ford ignition system does not get along well with multi-electrode plugs because the polarity is reversed on one bank, i.e. the spark actually fires from the electrode to the tip. In other vehicles I'm not aware of them having problems, except for trailjeep here.
Auto Zone seems to push the hell out of Bosch plugs though.
I use AC's in the family GM's, Autolites in the family Fords, and a friend who is an experienced mechanic swears up and down that Chryslers and Jeeps run best with Champion plugs. The Jeep had Autolite double platinums when I got it and when we did a compression check they looked pretty good, so we put them back in and it runs fine.

you would be best to stick w/ champion. autolite is ok but champion definitely has better quality.

I have run a set of regular Bosch platinums in my 05 4.0 and they ran great. I had a bad pinging problem with the worn out stock NGK plugs and it went away with the Bosch platinums. When the NGKs were new they were fine but as they wore the engine pinged. The platinums seemed to hold a crisp spark longer but they did eventually wear out (the ground electrodes lost the sharp edges) . I then put in a set of Bosch platinum +4 plugs. These ran great but are now starting to ping (at about 20K miles on them) . I figured that with four ground electodes you'd have more sharp edges to wear and get more miles out of them - guess not. Next set I'm going back to the regular platinum plugs (one electrode). These seemed to be the best "bang for the buck" . I swear the Jeep seems to have more power when the plugs are new. Best of luck - John

I run Autolites (It depends what year rig too) but in my '86 MJ, I ran Splitfire plugs and wires, and it ran very nice till the guy I sold it to blew the head gasket (lack of maintenance) 100,000 miles later.
I run NGK BKR6EK plugs in my '87 MJ with a 4.0L (EGR died and head was shaved twice so it pinged bad on other regular plugs) with 375,000 miles on the original motor w/o ping.

Ok....so i went with Champion double platinum and set them to .035! Everything went well and seems to be running like a champ! Thanks for all the advice guys!!
