Carter BBD Problems

I bought a 1983 CJ7 last week. I read on here how to fix the idle problem. Sure enough I did what it said and it seemed to idle and accelerate better. Then I noticed that the PCV valve was "rattling" while the engine was running so I replaced it. That is when everything went wrong. For starters the idle was down to about 500. I turned the idle back to around 800 and it idled better. Then when I drove it today it is doing all kinds of crazy things. For starters, when I am shifting the idle does not come down when you let off the gas. If I shift at 1800 RPM the engine will only come down to about 1500 RPM between shifts. Also if I am coming up to a stop light and let off the gas the engine slowly comes down to about 500 and then dies. If I keep bumping the accelerator it will come up some. Once at a stop if I bring it up above 900 RPM it will settle down to 800 and stay there. Sitting still I can rev it up and let off the gas as much as I want and the engine will never get below 800. Please offer any advice you may have. Thanks[addsig]

It sounds like your Idle stepping motor. If you have the dough you should replace the carb. Even if you fix it your still going to have some problem.[addsig]

What is the idler stepping motor?

I am wondering what I have done to make it run this bad. I wish that I had not messed with it at all. Is there any way that the new PCV vlave is the problem?[addsig]

OK guys, I've been playing with it today and may have a better idea of what is going on.....or can at least describe it a little better anyway. When I am decelerating is when the engine wants to drop RPMs and die. I think that maybe it is flooding. If I downshift and let the engine help out with stopping the Jeep it will backfire sometimes. Once at a stop if I bring up the RPMs and "clear it out" it settles back in at 800 RPM and runs fine. PLEASE HELP![addsig]

I got her fixed. I had to clean the metering rods again. I guess that they were clogged again. When I pulled the air cleaner it was dripping fuel from one side at an idle. That explains it all. It would not idle down when shifting because one side was still pouring fuel in and it would flood and die when stopping becuase it was pouring fuel in but the butterflies were closed and not letting air in. Apparently someone has done some type of a Nutter by-pass on this because the O2 sensor wire has been cut and where that little rod in the back of the carb bowl is has been JB welded over. She is running good now![addsig]
