Building an Exhaust

I have a `79 CJ-7 with the 304 in it and need to build me a new exhaust, the old flex hoses I have for an exhaust now need to be upgraded. My question is do both sides have to be sysmetrical? Or can i cross one over to the other then out the back, leaving on bank with a longer exhaust? Not worried about cats as of the first of the year!! Get exempted then!! YEAH!

it is not required to have them the same length... but for maximum scavenging (helps power by balancing out vacuum in exhaust) you should cross the pipes over in some manner which will help share the length of the exhaust and help share the scavenging properties of the system
