Bad Starter on 96 Grand?

My 96 Grand 4.0 refused to crank this wet and cold morning. My problem started yesterday but I managed to get it to crank and start fine on the 3rd or 4th attempt. On the times when it did crank after the 3rd or 4th attempt it turned over strongly, started immediately and ran fine all day long.

This morning she won't crank at all not even a weak turn over or clicking noise. However I have full electric power everywhere else so I am ruling out a bad battery. I've also checked my connections and seem okay.

My suspicion is that the starter has died on me but I'd appreciate any other opinions before I tear into it Any thoughts out there? Thanks everyone.

Just wanted to update everyone on the situation as I have seen my non start/turnover problem mentioned on other posts. I pulled the starter and took it in to have it bench tested where it checked out fine. After cleaning and wire brushing all the contacts and connections from the battery to the unit the truck starts sharp every time now. There was a lot of buildup everywhere and especially directly on top of the starter case. Because the unit is located under the oil filter I believe dirty oil being spilled during changes had built up over time and probably began to cause the unit to short out. Will from now on put a small paper or cardboard shield over the unit to deflect any spillage during changes. Lar.

every now and then I get a dead starter. Thought it was a bad spot as if I tap it while starting if goes. But I power wash the starter area and it's go for a while. When it happens again I re washed the area and works no problem again. Maybe I have dirty connections also. I guess I should re and re it and clean everything.

The same exact thing happened to me on my 96 XJ. Glad I read about it here. Was all set to run out and buy a new starter.
