Axle challenge I can't diagnose

cj7 4 cjC

Hey everyone, I found this forum in hopes that someone knew a little about a rear axle for a stock 1981 cj7 Laredo with a 304 v8. The passenger side axle shaft moves in and out about 3/8 of an inch and consequently rubs the brake drum on the shoes. I removed the shaft and repressed everything and all specs were correct. This is the extent of my diagnostic knowledge so if anyone has experience with this please help.

Worn bearings maybe. When you said "repressed" , what do you mean?

do u still have the 2 piece axle shafts in that amc 20 if so get new bearings and one pice shafts mine was doing the same thing the bearings in the axle the inner and outer where bad causeing lots of axle play that is why i rebuilt my amc and put a lock right lock in it at the same time i own a 1981 cj7

I had the bearing and hub taken off and pressed back on and they reset at the same spot as before. I did that because I thought maybe the bearing was not pressed correctly and that's what was allowing for so much play.

They are 2 piece, and I found a 1 piece kit for two bills but didn't want to spend that money if the problem was else where.
