Altenator

I have an 88 YJ with a 4.2. Currently working on a rebuild. Since I live in an area that doesn't have a vehicle inspection and my jeep will be primarily offroad I decided to remove the ecu/elctronics and go old school.

I have ran into a problem with a thin blck/brown wire that comes off the back of the altenator. Can anyone tell me what this is for and where does it go.

One person had suggested that it went to the coil but I am not running a coil anymore. Another said that it went to the idiot light.

Any help is appreciated.

Is your alternator internally regulated or was it regulated through the computer?

I can't seem to upload the diagram....But in 88 the alternators were internelly regulated....It is likely the lead for your gauge/ voltmeter. Otherwise, you should have a single wire connection on the back (a stud and nut).

The diagram can be found at http://iwantajeep.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/jeep-yj-wiring-diagrams-copy-1.pdf

You'll just have to search for your model year.....When you find "88" look along the left hand side for your wire color going to the voltmeter.
