Add a leaf

How hard is it to add a leaf to 95' YJ and is it a good way to lift my jeep? Also how much lift is expected when adding just one leaf to each spring.

i went to the junk yard and got some leafs from a pickup truck... one leaf pack did my entire jeep... i split up the pack, cut them all to the same size, sanded them, painted them, installed them.. and i gained an even 2 inches all around... total cost - $15... total time of prep and install - 5 hours

I used two leaf packs from the front of a YJ. Cut the eyes from the main leaf and use the top two leaves of each pack. This ensures the same spring rate all the way around. I got 1.5" but you can buy an AAL for up to 3". Rusty's has a 2" full-length AAL. Stick with full-length, they don't harshen your ride like the shorties.

It's simple to install, can be done in about half a day.
  • You'll need to open up the spring clamps, I cut the tops from mine but I've heated and bent open others that I've done.
Then support the jeep letting the axles hang.
Remove all u-bolts and jack up the axles.
PLace a large c-clamp near the spring centerpin and tighten.
Remove the spring centerpin and slowly release the c-clamp.
PLace the AAL in the pack according to length and reassemble, with a new centerpin.
    Cut the excess centerpin off.
Easily done without going through the trouble of removing the entire spring pack from the jeep.

full soft doors for an 87 jeep with rounded corners

I would go with add-a-leaves if you don't plan on getting a suspension lift at all. I Think that would be better than a shackle lift or body lift.

Worth the checking into! Go to the Yellow Pages and see if there is a Spring Service business inyour area. Most areas have one that does big trucks and dump trucks and the like. There is one here that will only work on a jeep or pick up on the weekend and the price is great.

Here they will have you come in on a saturday morning and remoce all four springs, Rearch and add up to two leafs and reinstall with new bushings and bolts for the grand price of $225.00.

I was not going to go that route with my yj but for my cj that is the plan sometime between now and spring time. These guys know their business and do a great job form all I have seen and heard.

Just a thought. For the trouble and cost of parts alone this is the way to go for me. I can not see putting to much money that I do not have to in a 25 year old jeep when my goal is just to run 33's. tug
