AC recharge '01 XJ

I am an AC idiot. I have done this before with my old '94 ZJ and I have never done it with an XJ. Will a '01 XJ take R134a? I have some cans of R134a, a pressure guage, and the hose that connects. Do I need anything else? Can I use the same equiptment that I used on a '94 ZJ? What is the proper way to fill and check pressure?

Read what the labels say under the hood. Otherwise, you have no idea if someone has put some other crap in there in the past.

R-12 use shrader valve fittings. R-134A uses quick couplers.

The best way is to completely evacuate the system...then put in however many pounds the label under the hood says to use.

Oh, and in general your low side pressure should be around 35psi or so, and your high side should be up around 140-160psi, give or take.

You should always check your pressure with the compressor on, at idle.
With an outside temp of around 85 deg. the low side should read close to 27-35 pounds give or take.

If you determine that the reading is low you can add through the low (suction) side. Be careful not to connect to the high (discharge) side. There is no need to add extra oil as each can of refrigerant has the right amount of oil blended into it.

You should look that the hoses and lines to spot any oily residue, this is a sign of leaks. You may want to consider doing a repair or installing refrigerant with stop leak in it.

good luck.
