Can anyone confirm an axle question? seems that I read some where that an axle housing that has a 273? gear was a special made housing and will not accept any lower gears as in 373,411 etc.

I believe what you are asking reffers to the carrier. With the Dana 44 or the AMC 20 rears there are 2 different ring carriers (differential case). Depending on which size ring you have dictates which carrier is used. With either model axle the 2.73 gear set uses a small carrier. I believe the both the AMC 20's and Dana 44 is 3.08 or numericly higher and 3.73 or numericly lower for the two different sized carriers, but that is off the top of my head. The same principle is true for the front axle as well.

Just to clarify, either size carrier will fit into your axle housing. Why do you ask? Are you re-gearing?

The carrier break is 2.72 to 3.73 for one carrier and 3.92 to 5.89, I think you can only go down to 4.88,s on the 20 though. the cj standard ratio after 81 was 272, 3.54. from 76-81 it was 3.54,3.73, all 4cyl,s got 4.10. Your axle was not special made, You just need one of two diff carriers depending on what gear ratio you use. Unless you are going to a non stock gear, or can change gears yourself, it would be cheaper to find used axles with the ratio you want already in it.

I have narrow track axles now, on my79cj, with 3.73 gears amc 20, dana 30. wanting to find some wide track.

I think your best bet would be to look for 82-86 wide track cj axles out of a 4cyl jeep, they are the same axles you have now but 3" wider. I say a 4cyl for the 4.10 gear, im not sure 373 was a option in the 80,s so you are kinda stuck with 4.10 or a 3.54 gear at best unless you want to install new ring and pinions. They should bolt right in. The rear axle spring perch may be a 1/2" wider on the wide track axle, but im not positive.

My '81 CJ8 equipped with Renagade Sport package ( narrow trac of course) and the iron duke 4cyl came with 3.54 gears. I also assumed that all 4cyls had 4.11's. I'm not sure if it was special order or what the deal is with it. All I can say is I was very dissapointed after checking the numbers.

Did you buy the scrambler new? If so, the only thing I can think of is a factory screw up, because all 4cyl came with 4.10 gears, I think that still holds true on current made jeeps. If you got it used, then someone changed them. I will double check on it ,but I just about bet my life on that statement.

Flatie46, Got some info for us. All 4 cyl with the 5speed manual got 4.10, the 4cyl with "4speed" either got 3.54 or 3.73. Until you mentioned it, I never knew that. I couldn't amagine what driving a 4cyl with 3.54 gears would be like especially with any larger tire. As you, I learned that "all" 4cyl got the 4.10. Thanks

Yep it's a 4 speed, the SR4 I think it's called. I also assumed it had 4.10's when I bought it and was dissapointed when I read the diff tag. I'm pretty sure this one has never been appart. I can't vouch for the first 10yrs of it's life but from then on I know the field it sat in very well. lol. I've owned several CJ's, projects and axels seems like I always end up with 3.54's. Thanks for the info, I try to learn all I can about jeepizum!
