I have just bought a 1988 cherokee laredo, and im planning on building into a strict trail rig it wont see pavement at all. I got a deal on a set of used 36" iroks from a buddy of mine in my dad's off-road club. Im planning on throwing them under my xj i was wondering if anyone knows how much lift im gonna have to be after to clear them. I do have a full width high pinion Dana 44 front axle and a full width Ford 9" rear axle. So my tires should stick out past my body pretty far so if anyone could let me know how much lift i would need with minimal fender trimming i would be pretty happy because no one can give me a straight answer im 16 almost 17 and its my 1st trail rig and i want it done the right way not wack-jobbed together.

thanks again if anyone could help me out.

strike the word minimal. Those narrow wheel openings just wont allow those fat tires under them. With wide axles, the meat of the tire will be under the stock flare location making it worse.

I'd say 8" of lift and cut sheetmetal like scrapping it was a lucrative business if you want to be able to flex the suspension.

Cut the fenders, bigtime, it'll help keep your center of gravity lower.

How much experience do you have wheelin, or with lifted rigs? You're jumping right in with 36" tires  Often it's best that the jeep grow as does your experience level.

why do you not want to trim a strictly trail rig?

trim the crap out of it and run 6-7 inches. when i say trim the crap out of it i mean cut out the fender wells entirely and relocate anything attatched to them. cut into the back of the body and take out the inner fenders too and loose the doors if its a 4 door. if this doesnt sound feasible to you, you probably dont want a strictly trail only vehicle. you want a show vehicle that does ok offroad

Thanks a guy in my dad's 4wd club said ill be needing about 7-8 inches of lift too so ill probably be going with the 8 inch.
I have been wheeling for about 9-10 years with my dad and he has been wheeling for 25-30 years. We have expierence on our side we know how to build things right and learned from most of our mistakes. But thanks for the info ill be sure to post a link with my xj on it when its completed and pictures of it being built.

thanks for that link with the cherokee that has 36's.

I would have to say that you will need atleast an 8 to 10 inch to clear the 36s easily

I would trim the wells a little bit, but if you cut it too much you will have to weld the panels together. xj's are unibody ,and will lose strength if cut too much. Lift it as little as possible, and cut as much as you can without getting into the strength of the body, to clear you desired tire size........

P.S. lower center of gravity is nice to have. JOE>

I fit 36x12.5x15 iroks with minimal cutting on the rear only and baja fenders on the front but ive got a 7.5 rubicon express x-flex with a 2in spacer and revolver shackle on the rear
