just came across an 01 cherokee thats in pretty good condition, and a fair price. Were all 2001s distributorless and is this more of a headache than earlier models with a distributor?

All the '01s are like that, and they don't seem to be problematic.
The front axle is also low pinion, something different from most all high pinion axles found in older XJ's.

Only a con if you lift it and/or wheel it. You can't lift it as high before running into driveline angle problems, and the driveshaft & pinion yoke are closer to damage from obstacles.

planned lift was 2-3" but regardless if its more prone to inappropriatly touching obstacles will be staying away from 01s
