how much would it cost to replace the front wheel bearing on a 1996 jeep grand cherok

Yeah my bad. I didnt bother to look for the parts before I answered. Sometimes something you think would be a simple fix, someone has totally screwed up. What has worked since autos were invented is not good enough I guess. I just looked at Advance's website and they list the bearing units...

    1988 cherokee engine question

It is my understanding that Jeep 4.0's did not change until 1994. After that you have to make other modifications. Don't quote me on that. I am with Mudderchuck on the rod bearings though. These engines have a lot of stroke and rod bearings are the weak link. Also the oil pumps are notorious...

    Older XJ Insurance Coverage Question

I agree. Carry liability only. If you wreck it....fix it. Its yours. You will pay more for collision in a year or so than you can buy another old Jeep for. Buy whatever will keep you out of trouble when or if you run into someone else otherwise, take your chances.

    head gasket ?

2nd thought. I would drain and flush the radiator and cooling system. If by change someone mixed different types of antifreeze in the radiator, I have seen it react by turning a black oily looking mixture. If you clean it out and it does not reappear then I would not worry about it as long as...

    head gasket ?

I would think if it was the head gasket, it would still lead coolant back into the oil, once the engine was shut off and the oil pressure went to 0. The coolant would still be under pressure until the engine cooled down. But on the other hand I cannot for the life of me think of any way the...

how much would it cost to replace the front wheel bearing on a 1996 jeep grand cherok

If you can do it yourself I would think you could get the bearings, race and seals for somewhere around 30 bucks if you get them at Advance Auto or Napa. About twice that if you go to Jeep. If you replace them yourself make sure to pack them really good with axle grease, which if you dont have...

Should i buy a REALLY high mileage cherokee?

The sell point for me would be the 5 speed. I don't have a lot of faith in high mile automatics. But I prefer the manual anyways. If you buy it I hope you have as much fun with yours as I have with mine. As I just posted on another thread in here about mine has just over 250K. Although I have...

    Oil Pressure Woes

Just to update....as the warmer weather started early, when my high mileage XJ 4.0 was really warm and sitting at a stoplight my oil pressure dropped to 5 psi or less!!! OOPS!! I would keep the engine at high idle until the lights changed. Tore it down as soon as was possible. Main bearings...

    Oil Pressure Woes

Yeah, I'm not real worried about the low pressure right now, but summertimes coming and when it really gets hot I am not sure that it will be ok then. The pressure goes up above dead idle so I don't think it is critical. However with 250K I am sure the pump is getting weak. I may have the...

    XJ Tires

No problem mudderchuck, many years ago in a land far far away, my ex's brothers ran a shop that I helped in a lot. Her older brother was a master of all things made of metal that go vroom vroom. No Really... he was. I learned a lot from him.....( and a lot more from her....lol)

    Oil Pressure Woes

My 87 Cherokee only has 250,000 miles on it with no internal work done on the engine. Although the oil light has never flickered, I am getting nervous about my oil pressure so I installed a mechanical oil pressure gauge. When cold it holds decent pressure at idle. 35 to 40 lbs. Road speed it...

at HWY speeds steering shakes real bad

When all else fails on those big tires check and see if you have not broken a belt in a sidewall, even on new tires it happens. Jack the tire up and put something beside of it about 1/4 inch from the tire and spin the tire. If the distance changes as the tire spins.....bingo!!

    XJ Tires

hey MudderChuck, the pointy end of the valve stem tool is to screw down inside a wrung off valve core, the threads are reversed so you screw it down in the direction that you would turn out the core. When it seats all the way down and you are very lucky it then continues to turn bringing the...

95 Grand Cherokee - Oil Pan

Just a thought. If it is a 4.0 it may be the rear main seal which is somewhat notorious to leak on these engines. Bad news and Good news(maybe) Rear main seal if I am correct is a one piece and cannot be changed probably without removal of engine and removal of crank. Possible good news...

    oil,oil,everywhere in the airbox...

sorry I meant the Vacuum line from the v/c to the intake manifold. Everything I read said to make sure and change the grommet itself as that can also be the culprit. But luckily they both came as a unit so there was no need to buy both separately.

Waste of a Jeep, but fun to watch.

I couldn't watch it. Makes tears come to my eyes...lol. No seriously, I would have loved to have what they just wasted. Darm IT!!!

    oil,oil,everywhere in the airbox...

87 4.0 did the same thing. I bought the little vacuum/ vent line from v/c to air box and it came with the grommets to go in the v/c. from advance auto for about 7 bucks if I remember. According to what I read the grommet itself is often the problem as it is rubber and sometimes swells up to...

the thing below the tire/wheel, but above the breaks - what is it called?

Its not that big of a deal. When I service now I just take a clicker wrench and go over them. But that one wheel will always be just a little loose.

the thing below the tire/wheel, but above the breaks - what is it called?

My 87 jeep cherokee has a bad habit of the left front wheel working loose about every 6 months or so. Can find nothing wrong but the lugs loosen off. Check them from time to time
