YJ Rear Tow Point?

What do you all think the best way to get a rear recovery point on my YJ is? Can I mount tow hooks to the frame as I have seen done on TJs? Or am I going to have to get a bumper of some sort with a receiver hitch? Let me know what I can do. Thanks, Lane

I have seen it done both ways, but I would go with the centered tow reciever. I was thinking about putting hooks on the rear frame rails but then it would be pulling on one side more than the other, and if you really crank on it, I would be worried about pullin the frame out of whack.
It's probably good to have them there just incase, but I would go with the nice, even, centered pull.

Most YJ receivers are rated at about 2500lbs tops, not near enough for a stout tow point. Don't use a receiver in a rear bumper, as it will just bend the bumper and rear crossmember upward (guess how I know).

You can mount a hook to the side of the frame, in front of the shackles.

Transmissions done...HELP

When stuck a couple of weekends ago, I just attached the guys winch rope to my bumperettes. It worked fine, however I wasn't stuck in some major deep goo.

I have the Warn front bumper, but with school costs rising I am saving my money for cost effective upgrades, and when I can cut corners, I must ufortunately do so. Bounty, you always seem to pull through with some good info, I think I am going to go the tow hook-on side of frame route, seeing as you have had an experience with recievers that I do not wish to relive. Thanks for all of your opinions and suggestions everyone, I appreciate it.

for a stock/near stock setup.... bounty's setup is the best

MerkL,
I'm surprised you still have your bumperettes after a having them yanked on. You must've been stuck in a big puddle. JK. :p Seriously, though, I wouldn't do that EVER again.

I have a class 3 hitch with a d-ring shackle. The class 3 hitches are rated to 3500 lbs. I only have the 2.5L so this is suitable. But if you have lots'o'accessories, you might want to look into a class 4 hitch (4,000 lbs.) if they make one for your model jeep.

Otherwise, Bounty's setup is best. You're not going to "pull the frame out of whack" if you're being recovered properly.

Well I know that some people have "pulled the frame out of whack" by using only one of the tow hooks on the rear, towing at the corner that is. You can always get a centered pull by putting a tow strap from hook to hook spreading out the load.

Yep, I followed Bounty's lead and mounted to my frame rail. Though I mounted mine a little more parallel with the ground. I also placed one on each side so theoretically you could loop over both sides and achieve the "center" pull. IMO there is no real good tow point on the rear of a YJ.

Just be sure to use Grade 8 or higher hardware and watch out for the gas tank when drilling. I needed a 1/2 inch bit.

Gravity helps keep the strap in place if you angle the hook down slightly. Be careful if you're pulling with the strap between the body and the bumper, easy to bend/break that body mount and bend the tub.
