YJ Gauge Problem

Upper clutch cover bolts?!?!

Hey all, I recently purchased an '88 YJ. The speedometer is the only gauge that works, all other gauges dont work at all. Previous owner said something about it needing a new gauge regulator, however I cant find anything about this part: Autozone doesnt carry it, no mention of it in the Haynes manual, and I haven't seen anything posted about this anywhere online.

It seems unlikely that all of the senders are bad, and previous owner said that he tested the gauges on another jeep and they worked. I tried following the cables out of the firewall but I'm still unlcear as to where the source of the problem might be.

Anyone have any suggestions?

RE: Buh Bye for a while!

Get used to it. Its a common problem in the yj. In my 88 all that works is the rpm gauge and speedo.

Re: RE: Re: toyota 4 banger

Well I think all the guages are independant of each other. Sounds to me like it is some type of problem with each individual guage.

What I would do is take one that's easy to get to and try to get it to work. Then you'll know if it's something with each one...or all of them together.

RE: Stripping paint

I dont think you an do that.

THey are all on a circuit board from the water tmp all the way accross to the oil press.
It might be a ground.

OR if you feel like spending money, Ill sell you my complete dash. guages and everything. I have an 87 YJ. its a black dash. No cracks or anything. Im restoring my jeep at the moment - the dash is sitting in the basement. If I had (that) money Id like to swap in a blank aluminum dash and do the guages custom...

So if you want to help me out, Ill help you out!!!!

RE: Rolling again

hay kg6mti what is that radio thingy lookin deal under them sweet azz guages. ive seen them b4 but have no idea what thay are. enlighten me

kg6mti, those gauges look great, how much of a pain was it to wire them? I also like hoobness' idea of replacing the whole dash. I found a page where some guy actually swapped in a CJ dash on his YJ, which would be much much better than the crappy plastic dash from the YJ. My only concern is the wiring. Furthermore, I have a 22-gallon gas tank, is that going to cause a problem with a new gas gauge?

The radio under the gauges is a remotely mounted face from a Yaesu FT-8900 ham radio. It is a quad band (29/50/144/430 MHz) mobile FM transceiver. The ham radio is way better for communications than a CB. My Jeep has both a CB and the ham radio but the ham radio is really a nice piece of mind when you are far from home. With 50 watts on 29, 50, and 144 MHz and 35 on 430 MHz I am usually confident that I can hit a repeater in what ever area I am in. As long as I can get to a repeater or another ham I am going to get home or be able to call for emergency help.

The gauges are Auto Meter Phantom 2 1/16” white faced gauges. I can get the part numbers for anyone that is interested. The best prices on the gauges that I have found are at http://www.SummitRacing.com. They offer free shipping and they only charge $8.95 for handling no matter how much you order.

The wiring was a piece of cake. I took a little more time than I probably should have but I just wanted to keep it fairly neat and orderly. Here is the picture of the wiring just in case you didn’t see it in my picture gallery.

I used a piece of 3/16 black acrylic plastic that I bought from Tap Plastics here is Sacramento, CA. They will cut the plastic to fit. Then I just laid the plastic over the factory Jeep bezel and traced through the factory holes for the gauges. Then I used a 2 1/8” hole saw to cut out the four holes. In the picture above you can see how the gauges are mounted into the holes. As for the wiring Auto Meter supplies really good instructions for the wiring. The oil gauge and the temperature gauge come with new sending units to match the gauges.

n0madic you should check the sending unit on your gas tank. As long as the sending unit functions as 0 ohms empty and 90 ohms full then you will be fine using the same gauge that I did. If not Auto Meter makes the same gauge that uses different Ohm readings to match different OEM fuel tank sending units.

Let me know if anyone has other questions I can provide other pictures or information.
