i question how they determined the phaeton is the second most expensive. it starts at $66k, and is sandwiched in beetween a $250k maybach, and $300k+ phantom? surely the repairs on a vw can't make that much of a difference, hell, you could just buy 3 more before you get to the same price as the others.

I don't think I agree with that, or at least don't understand it. It takes into account "the energy needed to plan, build, sell, drive and dispose of a vehicle from concept to scrap heap". I can understand a hybrid costing a small amound more to dispose of, because of the different componets, but I wonder how much weight they are putting in the "plan" phase. Are they trying to say the engineers had to have their computers on longer while they drew up the plans for a prius?

Cool stuff, but I dont' think that article went into enough depth for me to quote it a parties.

Looks like they are talking about energy costs, not really dollar costs. How much energy it takes to make, market, sell, own, and throw away a car.

thing is, if they're talking about energy costs to build them, all the tree-huggers with their hybrids (i use tree-huggers with all due respect, kinda) dont care about that. everyone is like hybrid! hybrid! hybrid! and not taking into consideration all the costs to make and dispose of. they just think their saving the planet by using less gas and saving their hippy dollars.

wow its high up on this soap box. i guess i'll step back down. i just remember having a heated debate about this in one of my poli sci classes last semester. i'll stick to my jeep thanks.

Most hybrids use batteries to store energy...could they be thinking about the energy to make and then dispose of these wet cell batteries?

Yeah, that was my take on it. Everything is included, from "dust to dust" I think it said somewhere in there. The cost to make everypart of it, cost to buy, own, operate and cost to dispose of everylast part.

They are not considering the extensive amount of mods that a wrangler requires.
