whining sound coming from under hood

i have an '88 cherokee 6 cylinder, 4.0, manual transmission. it just recently started making a high pitched squeel coming from under the hood. it sounds like it is louder when the engine is idle than when i'm going down the road. it is defiantley loud when crusing through a parking lot, enough to make people look at my car. i dont' think it is related to the belts because it has had new belts put onit in the last 2months. it also started to burn more gas, and put off a very black emissions from the tail pipe. if i let my car warm up outside in the morinig it will turn the grass black form the emissions blowing on it. if anyone has any ideas, i would appreciate the feedback.[addsig]

sounds like we have two seperate issues here... the squeal sounds like a bearing or a belt or a vacuum leak.

the black crap coming out is oil. burnt oil. if it consistently comes out as it warms up it is most likely piston rings. if it just comes out as it is firing up, it is most likely valve seals. either are not good.

how many miles do you have? is it fuel injected or carb'd?[addsig]
