Where to mount tow hooks?

After sinking my jeep in a pond, I now realize the need for tow hooks under the front bumper. I know that the off road package comes with hooks, I was wondering if there were holes under there to bolt up or what. Or am I better off drilling? Or should I spring for the hooks from the dealership or the $7.00 ones from pep boys?

Thanks[addsig]

Yup you need recovery hooks onthe front and rear, As to what kind and where to put em give some background on what kind of jeep you have. This is an ez fix! Welcome to the board tug[addsig]

i have the pepboys ones on my XJ... they're mounted right to the frame. i know i'm not supposed to, but i can't afford the brackets that are "necessary"... i mounted one rear, one front...[addsig]

I've had virtually every 4wd at one time or another and have never mounted my hooks to anything other than the frame. I've never broken a hook or ripped a frame member. And, I've always bought the el cheapo hooks.[addsig]

I have a 92 4dr lareado. I was able to scap up some cheapo hooks from pep boys, but with out drilling the frame I've got nothing. Would it be ok to drill thru the frame? Also my best Idea was mounting them on the bottom of the front bumber mounts. Which is where I thought they came stock on the xj's with the off road package. Anyone with the offroad package know how they are mounted?

thanks[addsig]

cherokees with the offroading package have the special brackets for the tow hooks... i think they're like 65 bucks a set. if you wanna just mount them on the frame, i used a dremel and filed down a some lips, used some fender washers to space things, and ground out a few holes to make the big fat bolts fit through the frame. a little custom work, but its better (to me) than buying those brackets. took me about an hour to mount two hooks.[addsig]

Thanks, Just spent about a hour and half mounting the tow hooks. They look just like the stock ones, and I got them on sale for $10.00 for two...(a friend hooked me up)....i'm definatly glad I went with the cheap ones over the stock ones.
