whats wrong?

I JUST BOUGHT AN 89 JEEP WRANGLER FOR A GOOD PRICE BUT IT NEEDS ALOT OF WORK. I CHANGED THE FUEL FILTER BUT IT STARTED SMOKING REAL BAD. MY BROTHER IN LAW SAID THEY MIGHT HAVE GIVEN ME ONE FOR FUEL INJECTED ONE. SO I PUT THE OLD ONE IN AND IT RAN FINE. BUT NOW ITS HARD TO START AND SMOKES BLACK (UNBURNED FUEL) REALLY BAD. AND RUNS BAD. IF YOU CAN HELP PLEASE DO SO. THANKS. KEEP IN MIND IT RAN PRETTY GOOD BEFORE ALL THIS.

You could remove the fuel filter completely and it would still run right. There is no fuel filter that will cause it to run rich. I think your problem is unrelated, unless the problem has always been there and the old filter was starving it for fuel.

That's what I was thinking too. Or it could be that your "CAPS LOCK" key is stuck......

Re: RE: whats wrong?

Sounds like it might be the float sticking......tap on the top of the carb a few times with a screwdriver handle or something similar and see if it clears up. If that doesn't cure it you may have a bad float. Hard to say without being there but that's where I'd start. 8)

   Too funny, Sparky!

do you think its the stock carb, because the problem wasnt there before when i drove it. so what else could it be? i checked the new spark plugs i put in and they are all black. I also changed the distributor cap and buttom along with some new wires. what should i do next?

double check the carb float, make sure your gaps are correct and you can also check the timing... if the plugs are black its def. a rich condition - seems a weird coincidence (sp?) that it happened to start when you changed the plugs out... are they the same temp range? - probably not too helpful but felt like typing and throwing my $.02 out there.... g'luck! (nice year by the way!)

Yeah, Jairollin01, most places I've been on the internet, CAPS usually equate to SHOUTING!! Sparky meant nothing personal, just havin' some fun, which we like to do here. An '89 for 800 bucks!!! Sounds like a HELLUVA deal.....you did good!! Not much help here for your fuel-burning problem, but best of luck to ya! For that price, a rebuilt engine slapped in there would still make a deal! Welcome to the "Z"!

Custom Built YJ

ITS OKAY ABOUT CAPS JOKE. GLAD TO BE PART OF THE JEEPZ. MY BROTHER INLAW TOLD ME ABOUT IT, HE HAS AN ON 33'S AND MODIFING IT AS WE GO ON WITH MY STOCK JEEP. IT REALLY NEEDS ALOT OF TLC. THANKS AGAIN. YOU MIGHT HERE FROM MY HELPING BROTHER IN LAW ALSO . ( WHATS CJ MINSON ) COOL WEB SITE THANKS.

Welcome to the "Z", Jai....glad you weren't offended by the joke. Seriously, though, it's considered bad form to type in ALL CAPS on a message board. Sounds like you got a heckuva deal on that YJ!! Sometimes, the Jeep gods just smile on ya, right?

Somebody earlier mentioned the sparkplug gap. That could be the problem. If the gap is too wide or too narrow, it could leave unburned fuel in the cylinder on one stroke then burn it all on the next and foul them.....wait.....maybe not....oh, heck, I've confused myself again trying to play mechanic. But I did sleep at a Holiday Inn last night.....

RE: 3" BODY LIFT

I WOULD RECOMMEND REPLACING THE STOCK CARTER CARB WITH A MOTORCRAFT 2150, PROBABLY SOLVE 95% OF YOUR PROBLEMS.

$800 is great anywhere! - i grew up just outside Orlando in Winter Park (Seminole County) b/4 moving out here 8 yrs ago - miss the mud but not the rain - lots of desert here to play in! - before paying for a rebuilt engine check the boneyards out towards Bithlo on Hwy. 50 and near the airport (on Goldenrod Rd.) - if theyre still there - you may find what youre looking for and save $$$ for other mods!

cool man, thanks. I live right down the street from the race track (bithlo) 4 miles east from ucf. but work in osceola county. but thanks again.
